PRESENT
Watching her now, I can feel her dejection. Her eyes darts on the sky for quite a while, waiting for the colorful dancing lights she's been dying to see but to no avail.
'Hey...' I broke her silence and reverie while joining her on the bench outside the cabin we rented on.
'It's our last night here yet nothing shows up...' the sadness in her voice was too obvious not to notice.
'Have a little faith May.' the words I could muster trying to keep her hopes up.
'I do... it's just that... it feels wonderful actually. I just realized it now. Ahmmm, every moment with you brings back that old feeling and bearing... that... that 5-year-old-me when my mother's around.' she smiled. 'I always love that feeling.' she continued.
'So I possess that mother-figure, huh?' I smirked.
'You do... You're more than what you can give yourself credit for Edward. You're more than a friend to me. You're like a sister, a brother, a father and a mother, rolled into one.'
'I think you left out one thing.'
'Ahuh? What would that be?'
'Boyfriend.'
'Bwahahahhahaahhaha.' she laughed her heart out while mine bled to death.
It was not a joke. But to make her believe it was, my mind convinced myself to join her guffaw but my heart was too stubborn to obey. Thus, a blank face was everything my system could afford to do at the moment.
Her laughter echoed around the place and I saw tears escaped her eyes. She's very happy with my sentiments. This is the price I pay. And I'm willing to pay at all expense.
'Do you miss him?' she asked trying hard to slow down her laughter.
I didn't answer her.
And then worry started showing on her face.
'Yeah...' I managed to say. I do miss him but not the same intensity you think it is. Guilt engulfed my whole being... and it's burning me.
'Maybe it's not showing because he's not here.... with you.'
I said nothing thinking it could lessen the remorse within me. I released a good amount of air, long and deep, as I lifted my left arm to cover her shoulders and without hesitation she leaned on me and hugged me tight as she whispered... 'All I want is for you to be happy.'
