We all sat at Pop's having general conversation, but my mind was wandering elsewhere. As I sat next to Betty and Veronica I looked across the table to where Jughead and Archie sat. I let myself drift into thought as I analysed Jughead's face. He sat, typing away at his laptop, oblivious to any outside conversation.
Something was bothering me. He'd been more reclusive than usual. Normally he'd chat away to me, we'd joke like the close friends we are. But for the past few weeks he'd sat in silence, typing at his laptop and avoiding me at school. It took all of Archie's effort to get him to even come and meet us at Pop's anymore.
At first I'd blamed it on the closing of the Drive-In, I know it meant the world to him. But I had a feeling it was something more than that. He looked more tired than normal, dark bags under his eyes and his skin even paler than usual.
"(Y/n)!" I was snapped out of my thoughts by Betty's voice next to me.
"Have you heard a word we just said?" Betty asked me, tilting her head slightly.
"I think (y/n) was a little lost in thought, weren't you?" I felt my face flush red at Veronica's comment, casting a quick glance at Jughead who didn't appear to have heard a word anyone had said.
I listened to them talk about whatever came to mind, I liked nights like this, but I missed the sarcastic comments normally provided by the beanie wearing boy across from me. I sighed, then tried to stifle it to avoid drawing any attention to myself.
Looking up I could see Archie looking at me. We were close, but not the close that me and Jughead were. Me and Jughead were best friends, despite what feelings I might be hiding from him, but Archie was like my brother - he even knew about my feelings for Jughead. Our parents had been friends as long as I could remember, so we'd grown up with a bond between us that had never broken.
I knew he could tell something was bothering me, but I couldn't say anything in front of Jughead and the others. I wasn't even sure what I could say. No one else seemed to have noticed Jughead's behaviour, and if they had they hadn't let on. But I noticed, I'd become so used to remembering every moment me and him spent together that I noticed this void in me as he blanked me every day.
"We have school tomorrow so I'm gonna head, want me to walk with you (y/n)? Your mom will be fine with you walking if it's me." I rolled my eyes at him, but nodded my head. I was going to be about 15 minutes late home, but Archie was right my mom loved him.
"Yeah we're gonna head as well, I'm saying with V tonight since my mom and dad are working late and still can't let me stay in the house myself in case I bring a boy home." Betty said, shaking her head at how protective her mom had been since everything had happened with Polly and Jason.
The two girls said their goodbyes and left the diner as I put on my jacket and got ready to leave with Archie.
"See you tomorrow at school Juggie?" I asked him.
"Yeah." He replied, not even looking up from him laptop.
"C'mon Archie, lets go." I said as I began walking out of the diner, trying my best to push the tears back. Archie looked at Jughead and saying nothing followed me out of Pop's.
We walked for about 10 minutes before Archie finally spoke.
"Hey (y/n), are you okay? You looked pretty down today, and I know it has something to do with Jughead, just speak to me, it won't help keeping it to yourself." I looked at him.
"I just, something wrong with him Archie. He's acting different, distant. And I know you guys probably haven't noticed it but he's my best friend. I've noticed. Something's going on with him and he doesn't seem to trust any of us enough to actually tell us what's wrong." I stopped, letting my brain catch up as we approached my front door and feeling my eyes well up.
"Hey, hey it's okay. He'll come around. Trust me." Archie said, pulling me into a hug.
"Thanks Archie."
"C'mon, lets go let your mom see me so you don't get grounded for being late."
*****************************
I was ready for school an hour earlier than I had to be in the hope I'd catch Jughead. I knew he'd be hanging around there, he always seems to be recently. I grabbed my bag and left, sending a text to Archie to let him know he shouldn't wait on me to walk to school. The school wasn't far from my house, and it seemed like no time had passed before I was inside the building. It was silent in the school, eerily silent. There was no students in yet, only the caretaker who unlocked the building every morning. I'd passed him watching something on a computer on my way in, so I knew where he was.
Walking down the corridors I heard water running. As I approached the door to the bathrooms I saw Jughead walk out and down the hall. Realising he hadn't seen me, I followed him.
He stopped outside a closet under a staircase that I didn't even know existed and as he opened the door to the closet I spoke, making him jump.
"Juggie?..." He turned to face me and I saw a look of shame cross over his face.
"Juggie, what's going on?" I asked, walking towards him.
"(Y/n) I'm fine okay, I'm just making the most of the schools bathroom facilities." He said, attempting to smile.
"You've never been good at lying. How do you explain that?" I asked, gesturing to the open closet behind him that was filled with clothes and blankets.
"I-I live here." Jughead said, his smile disappearing as I watched him visibly crumble.
"How long?" I asked him, trying to keep my emotions under control.
"Since the Drive-In closed, I was living there." He looked at the ground, shaking his head gently.
"Juggie why didn't you tell me? You know how much you mean to me, I would never push you away, you know that right?" I asked, looking at him.
"I don't want to burden you (y/n), this is my problem I don't want to drag you down with me."
As we talked we'd gotten closer. Standing face to face.
"Juggie you would never be a burden to me do you understand that? I love you Jughead." Silence came over us as I realised what I'd said.
"Sorry I-" I was cut off by his lips pressed against mine. As he pulled away he wrapped his arms around me, resting his head on mine.
"Don't apologise." He told me, speaking softly. I pulled away from him and looked him in the eyes.
"Jughead, come home with me." He looked at me confused.
"What?"
"Jughead, come home with me. Come live with me."
"I can't do that (y/n), I can't ask your family for that."
"Jughead I'll deal with my mom. Just please. For me."
He smiled at me, and I knew I'd won.
