WHEN I FIRST understood the definition of the word future, I didn't think mine would have so many limitations. I dreamed big, but dreaming can only get you so far. Eventually, you reach the age where reality starts to hit you, and I was hit hard.
There has always been an existing hierarchy, whether it had been between races or sexes. In the past, eliminating these hierarchies were our number one concern, but now that we have achieved this goal a new hierarchy has emerged.
Around one hundred and fifty years ago, Scientist Lincoln Worthington and his team conducted multiple experiments attempting to alter human DNA. Not many people at the time believed that they would be successful. A lot of the animosity towards science came from those who were still very strong believers in religion. Those who did support science were wary of this sort of experiment; they feared the outcome of changing and altering human DNA.
When nobody would volunteer to test out Mr. Worthington's finished formula, he and his team sacrificed themselves. They tested out the formula and it was one of the most successful tests ever conducted. Eye sight, hearing, speed, reflexes, strength, healing abilities, everything was altered for the better.
Mr. Worthington and his team called it: Homo Sapiens X, the X was not only to establish the number of trials it took to get the formula correct, but also to distinguish that humans with this new DNA are different.
Soon their children were given the same formula. But it wasn't open to the public, from the articles back then, Mr. Worthington was described as a man who held grudges. He didn't feel the need to share his new formula with the world, because they had been so quick to judge and cast him aside before he achieved his success.
There were around two hundred scientists on Mr. Worthington's team who helped create the formula, them along with their immediate family members all had the new DNA running through their blood. One of the scientists had a wife who became pregnant shortly after being injected with the formula. When she gave birth nine months later, the baby was tested and found to also carry the same DNA.
This meant that people could also be born Homo Sapiens X.
When the public found out what had been going on, they were outraged. They were angered that Mr. Worthington would not share the new formula. Multiple individuals banded together and decided that if Mr. Worthington and his team would not share the formula with the public, then the family members who hadn't yet taken the formula would also never have the opportunity of becoming Homo Sapiens X.
Therefore, somebody set fire to the entire building where Mr. Worthington and his team would conduct their experiments. It occurred during office hours and all of the exit doors were locked from the inside. Nobody knew who the perpetrator was, how they were able to lock the exit doors or how they knew which building the scientists were in because it had been a secret to the public.
Everyone in that building died, including Mr. Worthington and the secret to how the formula was made in the first place.
However, it was unfortunate for those who supported their deaths and the death of the formula, as there were already successors set in place. The children of the scientists who died and the scientists who were lucky enough not to go into work that day continued to carry the DNA in their blood. Those individuals who celebrated the deaths of Mr. Worthington and his team believed that the fire that killed them would help keep the new species of humans from continuing on. They were quickly disappointed, as the successors continued to multiply from marrying and having children with others. The DNA has only continued on to expand all the way into the present day.
And here in this present day, Homo Sapiens X, or as people call them now, the X's, are far more superior to regular humans. Now the hierarchy resides between two different human species. Homo Sapiens X's rose to superiority easily, their DNA was already better and they were hell-bent on revenge after the tragic fire.
Today, they still hold that same animosity towards regular humans. They carry the mark of an x tattooed on their right wrists to differentiate themselves, and segregation has been brought back after it was eliminated years ago between races.
My dream for the future was always to do something great, something that I could be remembered for, but in today's society as I mentioned before there are limitations to that, especially for people like me.
I am not one of them, I am not a part of the superior class of Homo Sapiens X. I am just a regular human, someone not destined for greatness or to be remembered all because of a hierarchy. My future is dim and it won't ever change, because people never change. The cycle is always circling back, and if the day ever comes where this hierarchy no longer exists, there will be another one ready to take its place.
That is how humanity works. That is how the world works. That is reality.
