Autumn

I still wondered why Dave gave me that old, yet beautiful, box. But that wasn't what got me wondering. Why was Gemini  in that photo? It was obviously her, no one could deny. That black hair, blue eyes and smirk belonged to Gem. But why did Dave give it to me, and not her? My brain always diverted my curiousity back to that.

It was even more curious because Gem never talked to me about her family, and I have never seen any of her family. It was enjoyingly mysterious, and it made me eager for the answers. I wish I could go visit Gem, but I didn't know where she lived, and I have never been to her house. Plus, Gem didn't come to school for the past two weeks. I texted her numerous amount of times telling her she's missing a butt-load of work; but she didn't seem to care. I even sent her a text saying Hunter and I miss her, hoping that will bring her back, but no such luck.  Both of us knew she was upset about something: Maddy keeps on dropping hints. Hunter came up with the idea that it was because of Maddy, but I thought she was too strong to be shaken by Maddy. But then Hunter said quite seriously, 'Even strong people break sometimes, Vester.' But I reminded him that she isn't broken; she never was.

I sweared under my breath. Why did Gem have to be so damn mysterious? Mum was at work so I wrote on a stray piece of paper and clipped it on a fridge magnet. It said, 'went out. ill be back sooner or later dont worry. im taking the car. bye xx' I got my coat and backpack. I loaded the bag with a water bottle, a pair of sunglasses, a book, some food and the box. I wasn't going to be home anytime soon. I felt like a change of athmosphere would help in figuring out the mystery. Taking the car keys, I went out and unlocked the light blue car, that was plenty old. My dad had an obsession with old cars. I got in and clicked a button that made the roof retract, turning it into a convertible.

I took out my iPod from my pocket and clicked on shuffle. A The 1975 song started playing and I put the volume on high. It was a sunny day, and we had a special school holiday, which was a relief. I drove out of the driveway and into the road. Even though I didn't have a car, I had a driving liscence, so I knew how to drive. In fact, I'm a better driver than my mum.

I tried to remember the road to the cliff, and indeed I did because I found myself in the very same place that was familiar to me. The road was clear and I was soon greeted with the place Gem stopped by. I turned off the car and taking the bag, I went through the shrubbery that helped keep the cliff a secret. Halfway through, I regretted wearing shorts. The sharp pains on my legs reminded me of what happened last time. I got cuts that lasted three weeks.

By the time I reached, the pain numbed. I sat down in an area covered with a shadow. The place was empty, unfortunately. I hoped Gem would be here as well. I took out the box, unhooked the lid and I  was greeted with the picture of Gem and her family- I think it's her family. Hmmm... I looked closely, squinting at the picture. The background... The photo was taken here! I saw the blurred houses in the background, and I mentally face-palmed myself for not noticing it before. Putting the photo inside the box, I take out the letter that I couldn't read.

"Autumn, right?" A voice behind me says suddenly. I jump a little at the unexpected sound and look behind me. It was the seemingly attractive boy, who had green eyes.

"Urm, yeah." I nod, while he sits down beside me. "Dan, right?"

He nods, grinning. He seems to have grown more attractive since I last saw him. He looks at the box quizzically, and picks up the photo.

"Is this Diamond?" He asks, looking at me. I furrow my eyebrows.

"Who?"

"Oh," His eyes widen," I mean Gem. Sorry."

"Yep, that's her." I nod. Pointing to the two people get to Gem I ask," Do you know who those two are?"

"Yeah, that's her mum, Esther and Adrianna, her sister." He replies.

"What happened to them?" I ask. I was beyond happy that I knew who they were, exactly.

"Her mother ki-" He started, but he stopped mid-sentence and looked at me sternly, his eyes turning a shade darker,"I don't think I should tell you." He whispers and leaves, disappearing into the shrubbery, leaving me dumbfounded.
