I place Sophie down on the floor as I move further into the apartment. Looking down at her, I feel my shoulders sag. I left her car seat with the boys. I don't really want a reason for them to come and find me. I'm embarrassed over what happened, and I don't want to cause any more problems between them. I know I overreacted, however I could see that they were all getting progressively angrier and I didn't want for them to start lashing out at each other over me. They must think it was because of their secret, and partly it was, but I knew deep down that their secret doesn't change who they are.
Looking around, I see that the apartment's exactly how I left it, the spiked bottle of alcohol still on the breakfast bar. I quickly walk towards it and tip it down the drain and then throw it in the bin, not wanting Sophie to see it or accidentally drink it. I turn back around and see Sophie is walking down the hall from her bedroom.
"Hey Sweetie," I greet, forcing a too big smile.
"Mummy, where are my toys?" I rub my forehead, closing my eyes. Not only did I leave her car seat behind, I left most of our belongings.
"They're still at Trystan's and Ryder's," I let her know.
"Can we go get them?" she asks, her brown eyes big and imploring. I press my lips together before replying.
"Maybe another day." Her eyes lose some of their happiness.
"Why did we leave so soon, mummy?" she asks. I breathe in deeply. "Where are they? Are they coming as well?" she asks, and I know that she's talking about the guys.
"We'll see them soon," I lie vaguely – I don't know when, or if, we'll see them again. She goes to ask more questions, but I stop her and dodge trying to explain to her than we may not see them again.
"Have you looked in my room? There may be some in there." She shrugs, her mind being taken off her questions, and goes running back down the hall. I look around and see that the apartment is a mess. If we're going to live here, we can't do it around everything. I sigh, and begin to clear the breakfast bar.
Under all the bottles and cartons from takeaway, I find a laptop. I don't recognise it, but am pretty sure that it's not my mum's. The money we do have is spent on the necessities, and the remainder is usually not enough to buy luxuries like this. It seems pretty new, and everything else that we own is either second-hand or cheap. I lift the lid, and press the button to start it up, wondering if I will be able to gather any information from it. The screen lights up to show that the laptop is already logged in, and showing the last page that the person was using on the internet. The page was for a bank account, which had over ten thousand dollars in. My jaw goes slack as my eyes go to the owner of the account – Amanda Raye. My mum. She has over ten thousand dollars in an account I didn't know existed. Where has she got it from? She definitely didn't get it from her jobs. Still in slight shock, I open another tab and go to the bank of the account I know about. I type in the account details, and wait for the figure of the account to show up. Two hundred dollars. I fumble with the stool next to me, trying to pull it behind me so I can fall down onto it. Ten thousand dollars. Ten thousand dollars and we're in a crappy apartment, barely surviving. Was she ever going to tell me about this account? Was she going to wait until we were homeless?
I hear the patter of Sophie's feet coming down the hallway and see that she is holding a colouring book and crayons in her hands. I slam the lid of the laptop shut, and show her a smile.
"What do you want for dinner, sweetie?"
Here you go! I am sorry for the long wait!
The very exciting news, and reason for the delay with this part, is that one of my other books (Hades' Daughter) is getting published on the 16th of August! It's amazing, and I can't believe that it's happening! If this goes well, potentially I could get other books published (like this one)! If you want to learn more then go to the parts at the end of Hades' Daughter starting with The Greatest Announcement Of All Time!
Where do you think Bambi's mum got the money from?
