I'm not that sorry
A knock at her door brought Sally's eyes away from the homework she was working on. "Come in." She called out, just as her cousin opened the door.
Rachel gave her a hesitant smile and Sally stared at her skeptically and sat up on her bed. Rachel closed the door behind her. Before saying anything, she turned back around and crossed her arms, "Can we talk?"
Sally's eyebrows went up in surprise. Rachel took a seat at the edge of Sally's bed when Sally muttered, "I guess."
Rachel sighed, "Let me start off by saying that I do know the circumstances of why you came to live with us." Sally's body tensed up and she sat a little straighter as Rachel continued, "I'm just not sure that I have the whole story."
Sally's lips pressed together before saying, "I'm sure you have the whole story, Rachel."
Rachel's eyes were filled with pity, "My dads said you haven't said yourself why you're here. And we've noticed that you act differently nowadays. You can't keep everything bottled up like that Sally."
Sally glanced down at her homework, unable to keep eye contact with her cousin, "There's no point. It's in the past. I want to keep it there."
"It's obvious from the music you play and sing that you want to tell someone." Sally finally met her cousins eyes, but not before making sure she was well composed. "I'm your cousin Sally. You can tell me anything."
Sally glanced at her nightstand. The family portrait faced her way and she felt her throat tighten. "You already know my dad died in a car accident." Rachel nodded, but Sally wasn't looking at her. "My mother... didn't take it well." Sally pursed her lips at the understatement, but continued, "She picked up her bad habit again... she tried to hide it, at first anyway. But after awhile, she didn't. She made daily trips to the liquor store and was out at bars during the week. I didn't see her much, but I saw the bottles she left behind." Sally paused and Rachel reached out to her, Sally cringed away.
