Three pairs of feet stomped up the stairs and Luke picked her up into his arms when they saw the water gushing from between her legs.
"Take her to the lab. Her water just broke. I'll be there in a second," Shaun said and then ran to the bedroom. "No, you don't. You are not getting out of bed," he said as soon as he walked through the door.
"Let me put it to you this way. I get up and follow Jenna to the lab or I have these beasties right here on this bed. Either I had the date wrong or they are early," Amanda said as she flung her legs over the side of the bed.
She pushed him away when he tried to lift her. "I need to walk. It will help with the pain. Just help me up and go get Elizabeth. I think her water just broke as well," she said.
Shaun helped her to the door and called to Luke. "Go get Elizabeth," Shaun said as soon as he stomped up the steps.
Luke came out with Elizabeth, scowling because she wouldn't allow him to carry her. They made their way down to the lab, really slowly and Shaun helped Amanda onto a gurney.
"I need to do a cesarian on Elizabeth. Will you be okay here for a bit or should I ask-"
"I still have some time. Jenna and Liz need attention first. If I need you, I'll call," Amanda said.
He kissed her head and went to Jenna first. After inspecting her Shaun bit his lip and said, "You won't be able to give birth naturally. I think one of the babies is in distress." He wiped his hands over his face and looked between the two women. "Now that we need him the most, he's not here. Chezlin, you will have to help. I'll do Jenna first, since she is in more danger and then we can help Liz."
Luke ran to get the equipment they needed from the basement and helped them attach the heart monitors to both ladies, before helping Shaun and Chezlin suit up.
Jenna cried out in pain before the gas took effect. Shaun waited for her nod before he sterilised the area and made the incision.
"Do not cut the cords straight away. Lay them on her stomach until they are both out and wait for them to shift before separating them from her," Amanda said through clenched teeth. She waved her hand saying, "I'm fine," when he took a step towards her.
He did as she instructed and laid both baby dragons on her stomach. Chezlin held them still while Shaun went to Elizabeth to do the same. When Chezlin's twin started changing he went back to Jenna and took a deep breath. Clamp in one hand and the scissors in the other, he reached out for the first baby.
"She will be fine, Shaun. I'm not wrong about this," Amanda reassured him.
Chezlin took the clamp from his hand and placed it around the umbilical cord of the first baby. When he had the second one in place he reached for the scissors.
"I'll do it. They are my responsibility," Chezlin said and then cut the cords.
Jenna's breathing picked up and then tears streamed from her eyes. "I can't feel them any more," She sobbed.
Chezlin wiped his own tears and laid them in her arms. "They are right here. Right were they belong. In your arms," he said.
Shaun cleaned her up and stitched her closed before turning to Elizabeth. Luke had already severed the cords and laid them in her arms. He had never seen tears streaming down the face of his gigantic brute of a brother before.
Luke turned a grin at Shaun and said, "She's fine. She didn't die."
He helped Elizabeth and then went to Amanda, pulling off the soggy gloves.
"I think it's your turn Mama Manda," Shaun said as he ran his hand over her forehead.
"Yeah, well get ready, because they are coming. Right now!" She shouted.
Shaun pulled on fresh gloves and swore when he raised her night gown. The baby's head was halfway out of her, already.
Shaun helped her to breath through it all and bare down when the contractions came. Almost an hour later, three baby dragons laid squealing on her stomach.
"Shhh, Mama is a bit tired so you need to give her some time to breath. Don't make such a fuss," Shaun said.
He took her outstretched hand and laid it on one of the babies. "They like your voice and my smell. You can cut the cords. They are ready to change now," Amanda said in a weak voice.
Shaun shook his head and held onto her hand. "I'm scared. I don't want to lose you. I've seen this happen one to many times," he said and then pushed his lips against her knuckles.
"I'm just tired. You have to cut the cords or I will ask one of the others to do it," she said.
Her hand started to go limp in his and he jumped up, reaching for her face.
"I said I'm fine. Now get done so I can go sleep. Please," she scolded.
Shaun raised the clamps in shaking hands and then felt two hands on his shoulders and heard his brothers' encouraging words. Chezlin's hand closed over his as he raised the scissor to cut the cords.
"Steady your hands. You don't want to hurt them. She will be fine. Trust, just this once," Chezlin said.
After a few deep breaths and a few convincing words to himself, he cut the cords and then dropped the scissors as he waited for the inevitable to happen. His whole body started shaking as her head dropped to the side. His eyes turned yellow as Chezlin reached for her.
"Do not touch her," he growled.
Amanda sighed and then looked up at him. "I thought I asked you to get done so I can go sleep. These babies are heavy," she said.
