One day led into the next and a routine started, where Shaun helped Amanda clean and feed the babies, before she fell asleep and he went to work on the chambers with Chezlin. When the day came for them to leave, the vessel had been equipped with all the cryo chambers and additional equipment that they wanted to take with to make life a little easier on the ladies.
Solar panels, water purifiers, all the materials to build a green house and the seeds-frozen to preserve them-to grow vegetables and herbs, as well as a few sewing kits-suggested by Jenna-to create clothes from the pelts they would gather.
Shaun bought a few furs and bags of foam, just to add a bit of comfort for the ladies. Amanda insisted that they would be fine wearing clothes made from the skins, but the thought of having her curves revealed to any other man, did not sit well with his dragon and set his teeth on edge, so he filled a few boxes with clothing for the ladies and the kids. Chezlin insisted on taking diapers with them since the skins would not work as efficiently as a diaper could.
Inspecting the cargo holds and some of the sleeping chambers, Shaun could only hope that the vessel would take off and not drop from the sky, because of the heavy load. Both Chezlin and Luke assured him that the weight of their cargo never came close to that of the seventy five, or close to eighty, dragons that inhabited the vessel when they left.
The six adults took a trip to say goodbye to Elizabeth's mother and then Shaun and Amanda went to go find the woman that pretended to be her mother for close to twenty four years. Shaun had called the number on Charles' phone and Luke used a tracker to pin point her location. It had been hard since her cell phone bounced from one signal tower to the next, but they managed to find a common area she could be in.
A small coffee shop with some tables set outside the shop seemed to be the location the cell phone led them to. Amanda waved Shaun on and he drove past, spotting her seated at one of the tables. Amanda asked him to stay in the car and then walked right up to the woman. He couldn't help wondering if Catherine had been her real name, after all.
From the rear view mirror he saw Amanda lean over and rest her arms on the table. Catherine grabbed her neck and gasped for air and then stood up, along with Amanda and walked to the car.
"Could you take us to my condo, please Shaun? I think that's the best place to have a little chat," Amanda said.
With Catherine in the back seat still clutching her neck, Shaun drove to the condo and noticed Amanda's clenched hand the whole way there. She clearly did not want Catherine to speak or she didn't want to give her the opportunity to jump out the car and end up under another one's wheels. For whatever reason she had her under a spell, Shaun appreciated being saved form listening to more of her lies.
Even more so after they arrived at the condo and Amanda marched her into the living room, that looked exactly like the day they left. Books all arranged neatly in a book case next to the wall unit that hid a television behind ebony doors and shelves decorated with mismatched ornaments.
"Is this really necessary? You already ruined my life. What more could you possibly want from me?" she shouted.
"How about the rest of it? It would only be fair since you tried to have us killed. A bomb? Really? Is that all you could think of? And to use the only person that Shaun trusted, that we trusted. WIth our lives. I'm still amazed that he helped you after you tried to kill him in that plane crash," Amanda said.
"He didn't have much of a choice. Dastiel threatened to go after his daughter if he didn't help," Catherine said as she made herself comfortable on one of the couches.
"He didn't have a daughter and Dastiel... well let's just say, he wasn't around when you ordered Charles to plant the bomb. You can stop the lies. We already know the truth. Unlike you, Charles didn't get the warning before Luke injected him with a lethal mixture of his blood, some toxin meant for giant spiders and a truth serum," Shaun said.
He leaned against the doorframe, staring at the woman that not only pretended to be someone she was not, but came across as a compulsive liar.
"Whatever you think is the truth had all been one pathic excuse to blind you to the actual truth. Brathos pretending to care so much about these girls that he injected himself with poison to implicate Dastiel. Playing the innocent dragon that lost his mate. He did all those things to her and tried to blame my husband for all of it!" Catherine shouted.
"Which one was that, again? Barlow, Ezekiel or Luther? The only one that got accused was Luther, which means you were never married to Barlow at all," Shaun said.
"Of course I was never married to that pathetic law abiding sack of-"
Amanda's hand closed into a fist, cutting off Catherine's words. "Watch you language. I have never and will never tolerate that kind of talk in my company." Amanda turned to face Shaun. "I allow it from Luke, because he has more than enough reason to be upset, but coming from a female," She faced Catherine again. "is just plain disgusting."
Amanda sighed and put her hands on her hips. "There is nothing more I wish to hear from her. I can end it all right here by stopping her heart and dumping her body as Dastiel did to all those women or I can wipe her mind clean. She won't remember who she is or anything after the day she was born. Which one would be kinder?" Amanda asked.
"Killing her would be kinder. Wondering around, not knowing who you are or where you come from? That seems a bit harsh," Shaun said.
"That makes up my mind then. Have your last look around, mother dearest. In about two minutes, you won't remember ever seeing this place or meeting us," Amanda said and then started waving her arms around.
