CHAPTER THREE

ASHES P.O.V.

I step onto the train after Evander, my fiance. I take a seat next to one of the many windows on the train, looking out to the forests of District 7 that I will miss so much. Evander sits next to me and holds my hand. He smiles and tells me everything is going to be okay. I think back to earlier this morning, I woke up and braided my long black hair, and i did my daily shopping at the market for my father. brother and me. I pick up an apple and place it in my woven basket, when Evander, my boyfriend, the love of my life comes behind me and surprises me, I don't usually see him in the market. He tells me to hurry and come back home. He leaves me with a smirk on his face, and I couldn't stop smiling because I knew what he was planning.

It's my birthday today. Sadly, it had to land on the reaping day, but that wouldn't stop Evander and my family. I hurry and finish my daily round of shopping and head back home. I walked up the steps of my log house, and opened the door.

“Surprise!” Everyone shouts. I smile and thank Evander, my father, and brother. They prepared and apple pie for my birthday, it's my favorite.

Suddenly, Evander takes my hands in his own.

"I have something for you.” He says. Evander gets down on one knee and pulls out a beautiful woven silver ring, with an emerald in the middle, the color of my eyes.

“Ashes, I love you. If we get chosen for the reaping today, I want you to know that I always will love you.” Evander says.

“Will you marry me?” He asks.

I was so happy and I couldn't express how excited I was.

“Yes! A thousand times yes!” I reply with a huge smile on my face.

Evander gets up and I hug him and we both start laughing.

Later, once it was time for the reaping, I was wearing a dress that was once my mother's, who died in a forest fire in District 7 a long time ago. Evander and I were happy despite the reaping, I didn't think the chances of us getting chosen were very high.

I was wrong.

Our host chooses the ladies' name first. I glance at Evander and we hold each other's gaze. He mouths 'I love you.' Which doesn't reassure me much. On stage, our host unfolds the slip of paper and reads the name.

"Ashes Roaman.”

My mouth drops and I walk to the stage.

Our host calls the boys' name, and when I hear Evander's name called. I try so hard not to cry. I have to keep my game face on. We both stand on the stage and stare at eachother.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you, the tributes of District seven.”

I snap out of my memories and watch District 7 disappear behind the train.
