CHAPTER TEN
CYN'S P.O.V.
I wake up to the morning light streaming through my windows. Today, we are going to plan for the interviews with our team. I take a quick shower and join my team in the sitting room, grabbing a small plate of fruit and taking a seat on one of the couches. Ione speaks up.
“Well, now that both of our tributes are here, we can get started.” She says.
Ione coaches Princeton and I on a list of things we have to perfect for the interviews, whether it has to do with presentation, smiling, posture, or manners. We kindly listen to Ione for a couple of hours all on she has to say, and finally we're done.
“Now, since you don't have a mentor for this part, you two will probably just decide amongst yourselves what you would like to do for the interviews. Usually, you mentor will coach you on how you are going to present yourself for the interviews. Maybe you'll be charming, funny, or fierce. It's how you want to make an impression on the Capitol and get sponsors.” Ione says. She knows a lot more about this than I thought.
“So work on that, and once you're done you have the rest of the day off.” Ione says happily, and leaves Princeton and I alone to talk about the interviews. We try a variety of different personalities, practicing by asking each other questions and then answering them depending on how we want to present ourselves. So far, District 8 hasn't been very special or memorable. Our costumes, our training, and our scores were all pretty average. I think we should try to make the Capitol and the other tributes remember us. I couldn't care less about the Capitol or the other tributes, besides Princeton, but making them remember and like us could save our lives in the arena.
“Okay, if you didn't know me and you were just another tribute, what would you have thought I was like?” I ask Princeton.
“I'd think you were sweet, girly, and never going to kill anyone.” Princeton replies with a sarcastic smirk. We both know that's far from true. People really underestimate me, once we're in the arena, I think the tributes will get a different view of me. Until then, I plan on keeping my true self a secret from them.
“Little do those tributes know, they are in for a surprise in the games. Alright, I'll just keep on portraying myself as sweet and innocent, until the games.” I decide.
“What should I do?” Princeton asks. Princeton isn't cruel or brutal, he won't go searching to murder. He's sweet, but he'll kill someone if he has to.
“I think you should just be yourself. You're likable and sweet, people will most likely underestimate you and they won't expect you to kill anyone.” I tell Princeton.
“Yeah, and they'll kill me first.” Princeton says.
“Well look at me! No one's going to form an alliance with me.” I tell Princeton.
“We'll have each other. We're sticking together throughout the games, Cyn. To the death.” Princeton says with a small smile. It's very reassuring, knowing he'll be with me. We'll be our own alliance.
“Yeah but Prince, what if we both stay alive until there's only a few tributes left, and we have to split up?” I finally ask the question that's been eating away at me for days.
“Don't worry. You'll get out of that arena alive.” Princeton says. I notice how he says you instead of we. I know Princeton better than anyone, he means to keep me alive even if it means his own death.
Now that we are ready for the interviews, we have the rest of the day off. The day passes by and once it's nighttime, Princeton and I sit on the floor of his room and just stargaze out the windows. We order a ton of food and talk, or think, or just sit in silence, enjoying each other's company. Princeton points out the stars to me. I'm not sure how he knows so much about stars, in District 8, there are so many buildings. There isn't much nature, and nobody really pays attention to it anyway.
