CHAPTER 13

ASHES' P.O.V.

Evander and I got out of the bloodbath more than alive, but we got some weapons and supplies. I managed to get an ax for both Evander and I, while he grabbed a backpack full of supplies. I wasn't exactly planning on getting anything from the cornucopia until after the bloodbath. It's foolish to throw yourself in there. As soon as the gong sounded, that Cyn girl was already at the mouth of the cornucopia, I didn't see that coming.

I give a huff of annoyance.

Once the gong sounded, Evander and I ran to the only place that looked like safety to us: The Trees. There aren't many trees in this arena, but there are some, so that's where we went. We just managed to pick up some useful things along the way.

Surprisingly, only six tributes died in the bloodbath at the cornucopia. That leaves eighteen of us.

Come on Evander, we can do it. We can win this.

Though I have no clue how we're going to get out of this together.

We went hunting, and killed a few small birds. We were currently cooking them under the safety of the trees, which hid the smoke nicely. Evander also found some water in large puddles in the city, it wasn't the cleanest, luckily a water purifyer was included in our backpack.

As we sit and eat our cooked birds, we watch out for other tributes and threats in the arena. There wasn't a tribute in sight.... At least, not until I saw them.

The District 8 pair.

Cyn was perched on a somewhat tall building, crouched down on the ledge, with her bow in her hand. Cyn and I held each other's gaze and we never broke eye contact. She slowly reached over her shoulder and pulled a single arrow out of the quiver slung across her back, she nocked the arrow on her bowstring and pulled the bowstring back, aiming the arrow right at me.

“Evander..” I begin slowly. Cyn still hadn't fired the arrow.

“Evander, don't move.” I tell him again. Evander doesn't mave his body, but ever so slightly looks up at me, and follows my gaze to the top of the building where Cyn sits, preying on us. Without thinking, Evander stands up and moves infront of me, shielding me from the danger of Cyn's arrow.

Cyn still hadn't released the arrow. We waited like this for another minute or so, until Cyn lowers her bow and arrow, and finally turns away from us, walking away from the roof's ledge and dissapearing from our sight. Evander immediately turns around and looks me in the eye, holding my face in his hands.

“Are you okay?” Evander asks me.

“Of course I'm okay. She didn't shoot me!” I say with a shaky laugh.

“Why didn't she shoot you?” Evander asks.

“I have no idea.” I say. I really don't know why.
