CHAPTER 14
CYN'S P.O.V.
I move away from the edge of the building-top, out of sight from District 7 and anyone else that might have seen Princeton and I. So far, nothing had happened in the arena. Tributes died in the bloodbath and the cornucopia, but ever since then, the gamemakers have left us alone. Which makes me feel like they have some terrible things planned for the tributes that they are saving for later.
“Princeton..” I begin, approaching him. “I didn't shoot them.”
Princeton smiles down at me, laughing slightly.
“What?” I ask, confused as to why he's laughing at me.
“I knew it. What did I tell you? I knew you'd be too sweet to kill anyone.” Princeton jokes.
“Oh shut up!” I yell and throw my flask at him, though I'm laughing too. “I want them as allies!”
Princeton looks at me.
“Are you sure? Are you sure you want to take that risk?” He asks.
“There aren't many tributes here that I’d want as allies, but District seven is one of them. I don't know if we can survive this arena alone, we might need them.” I explain.
“They might not want you as an ally after they saw you targeting them...” Princeton tells me.
“It's worth a shot, I guess.” I say.
Princeton sighs.
“Alright. Arm yourself, in case they attack, and we'll go.” He says.
Princeton loads his pistol and hides it inside his shoe, and I do the same with mine. That way we won't look like we are armed. We gather up our supplies and head back inside the building from the roof where we were. We walk down all the rusty stairs until we're at the bottom floor—or what's left of it.
Ashes and Evander weren't far from us. We only had to walk a little ways before we hid momentarily behind some wrecked cars. We didn't have much of a plan...We approach them with friendly smiles and if they agree to join us, our plan succeeds. If they attack us, we fight back. If they decline, but don't attack....
We'll see.
Princeton and I come out from hiding, and slowly walk towards the pair.
“Ashes!” I call out calmly, so it doesn't seem like we're stalking them. Ashes and Evander both turn around at once, picking up their axes and holding them in battle-ready positions, but holding their ground. Princeton's arm moves protectively around my waist.
“Wait.” Princeton says in a calm, relaxed tone. “We want to form an alliance.”
“No! This is a trap. You tried to shoot us.” Spat Ashes. She looked even more intimidating than usual, with her long, black hair twisted back in tight cornrows.
“I didn't shoot you because I wanted you for an ally.” I try to explain. Ashes doesn't look convinced.
“Listen...The truth is, we all know that bad things are coming to the arena. You and I could both use all the help we can get. I've wanted you two for allies ever since training.” I tell them the truth.
Ashes lowers her ax, and Evander follows her lead.
“You're pretty good with that gun, huh?” She asks.
“You could say that.” I say with a smile, but Ashes still doesn't look happy. She looks at Evander, everything they would discuss about this was passed through eye contact.
“Alright, fine. We're allies.” Ashes agrees. “We might split up at anytime throughout the games, and that's okay, but just as long as you don't betray us, you won't end up with an ax in your back. Got it?”
“Got it.” I say dryly.
Evander and Princeton were still glaring at each other distastefully. I realized that if we never warmed up to one another, this alliance would be useless.
Ashes gets back to preparing the food for her and Evander, while he stands guard. Princeton walks over to Evander and they starts talking about the games, or about themselves, or their battle strategies. I was happy to see them getting along so well all of a sudden, when I looked at Ashes and saw her watching them, with an amused half smile on her face.
I caught her gaze, and we actually laughed.
