Gray watched Tessica shift her body on the bunker's bed as she breathed shakily. He knew she was upset over the fact a dead child still laid on the boats upper surface, but she was extremely needed by Gray himself and Leon. She needed to be on their side of things, she needed to agree on a plan with them to save themselves.
He sat down beside her as she ignored him. He knew it wasn't towards him, yet couldn't help but feel somewhat responsible. He knew how much she cared about living creatures. She always went by the rule that if it wasn't to be eaten, its life wasn't to be spared. The thought of this was slowly convincing him that she wouldn't be on board with them.
"Twas a tale, twas a game, twas a bloody shame. The way it turned out. Now they're together at the bottom and its better but it leaves me cursed , because I can't feel love,"
Gray shivered for a second at the sound of the voice. Upon realizing it was Tessica herself, he looked over at her. Her eyes were now facing him, full of liquid, full of distress. He could tell she was done with it all and he wanted her home just as much as the rest of them.
" So I've gone out to sea. But this time it's gonna be. A burial for me," He sang back to her.
She curved her lip while holding back a smile. She knew why she chose that song and it hurt him deeply. She knew more than he even knew.
"You too," he brought up.
She became to heave out of nowhere. Gray quickly grabbed a bucket and held her short hair off her forehead. She was burning as though she was on fire, he wondered if she was truly sick and not just hurt. As she vomited, she screamed in torment. He felt pain for her, more so than he ever had.
"I want to go home," she cried. "I need to go home."
Gray let her fall onto his lap as he attempted to push the bucket near them farther away. He laid his hand on her head as she weeped for all of humanity. Enough tears to fill another pale. He wished he could understand how one could care about an unknown soul so much. Tessica truly was something else.
He remembered his task at hand and sighed heavily. As he did Tessica sat up and looked down at the floor. She squinted her eyes in pain as she did.
"Tess," he started again. "Do you hear them too?"
"The voices? Yes I do," she said seeming pressured. "But, Sirens sing Gray." she pointed out. "They don't just talk to certain individuals."
"I am beginning to think there are a lot we do not know about these seas Tess," he told her. "And a lot we don't know about the life inside of them."
"I agree, but there is one things I know about that I wish I didn't," she confessed.
"What is that Tess?"
"They told me that this means life for life which you already know I am assuming. Since you and Leon are planning to feed Sirus to them,"
Gray felt his eyes open wide at her in disbelief. How on earth did she know? Neither him or Leon had ventured down to her in over a day. There was no way she heard them whispering up there if even the old man didn't.
Yes Gray, we talk. A voice admitted to him.
"Stick to singing you horrid creatures!" He yelled angrily in to the air.
Tessica stood up and went to grab the bucket that was starting to slide on the wooden floor. She retrieved it and began walking towards a tiny room that was hidden in the corner of the cubicle. She went inside and closed the door.
"Tess, you need to listen to me," he said quietly while walking over to the door.
"I can't let you do this Gray. I can't let you murder one of your own kind for our own safety. It is wrong!" she sobbed on the other side.
Gray leaned his body closer to the door and held his palm on it. He could tell Tessica was very close on the other side as he listened to her weak mumbles.
"Tess. Cayde would be able to convince you otherwise and I know it. He would need your help too. Just like I do now,"
The mumbles disappeared as the door swung open in front of him. Losing his footing he found himself falling towards the agitated woman in front of him. Fortunately, she caught him and pushed him back, avoiding what could have been another cause for all evil. When she did he could tell the exasperation spreading over her face. He had never seen her like that before, ever.
"Cayde always loved me Gray and you know that. You on the other hand were a dog! In fact, until our last departure a month ago, I never wanted to even see you on the boat again! You always eyed up my sister and acted like I was a nobody. I try Gray! I try to be kind and I try to be just, it is my job. However, I will not stand here and let you liken yourself to the man that I once loved. The more I listen to your talk of appearance of these monsters! The more I remember who you are. You're nothing but a pirate of hearts! I will not help you murder a man, just because you have been kind to me the past couple of days. Of course you would be, we are going to die here and I am the last woman in your current earth,"
Gray took a step back as Tessica blew up in front of him. He had no idea. He had no idea she felt so strongly about Cayde and about him. He never knew she even cared for his attention let alone noticed it was diverted most of the time. He felt like a fool, he had missed out. He knew what she said wasn't her, it was fear and desperation talking in the form of a counselor. Yet, he knew no one spoke so strongly out of nothing.
In the unexpected turn of events however, he found himself grabbing her arm as she tried to walk back to her bed. She quickly jolted around to flash him a scowl. He stood completely still as he looked at her.
"I am not a man who sees strictly like you think I do Tess. I am not by any means a dog and I will not be called one. Just because I don't tell you what goes on in my head does not mean it is not there. Me and Cayde are different yes, he grew up with a family of ten. He had brothers and sisters. I grew up with my mother only, once my father disappeared. She was all I had. That one woman was all I had. So, excuse me for being close to woman and excuse me for giving you the impression that I am nothing but a travelling sailor. Right now though I need you more than ever, I need you more than I needed you that night you saved my life or the night you stopped me from beating Sirus up on the spot."
He dragged the woman closer to him as he tightened his grip on her arm, not letting her escape.
"And of all people on this entire sea, not just this boat, I want you to live so that you can continue to make this world a better place. Whether it kills me or not. However, we have an option now. I jump off the side of the boat tonight and sacrifice myself. Leaving Leon and you as the only two who believe in what's out there, but haven't been in contact with the sirens. Or we find a better plan, one that makes sense. Because losing you or letting you die is not an option for me Tess, like it was never Cayde's. So please, don't try to stay down here with a plan to rot,"
He loosened his grip on her arm as she stared in to his eyes intensely. The hazel of her eyes turned green as she stood completely stationary. Then, he did exactly what he knew deep down he shouldn't have done.
Grabbing the back of her head he pulled her mouth to his. Without hesitation he realized she had given in as well. It was an unfortunate moment for the both of them when the realized the deep seated emotion that was un talked about. In Grays being though, as great as he wanted it to be, found himself pulling back yet again.
Tessica said nothing as the humming of a thousand angels seeped in through any cracks in the boat they could find.
For the love of a sailor is the sweetest of all. The most precious and the most kind. The most innocent and the most divine. With blood the delicious taste of fresh red wine. That's the idea, she will soon be mine.
"We need to act fast," Tessica spit out. "Before they make the plans for us."
"We need to go talk to Leon Tess," Gray confessed sinfully. "It's time to make a move of some sort."
