The next day a car horn sounded. I looked out the living room window. Declan was sitting in his car waving. I grabbed my dance bag and ran outside. He flung open my door for me.
"Is it okay if we pick up Jessi? You don't have to," I said.
"It's no problem."
"Okay. Thanks."
Jessi jumped into the back of the car. "Hey Selena! You heard from your mystery man yet today?"
"Mystery man huh? What's his name?" Declan asked. I could swear his lip twitched into a hint of a smile
"He won't tell me. He's a major pain," I replied. "So what song are we dancing to?"
"Could It Be You I think," Jessi answered.
"Let me guess...It was your week to pick wasn't it?" I replied with a smile.
"Why yes, I do believe it was," she smirked. We pulled up outside the dance studio. Jessi ran inside to talk to the crew's leader.
"So if we do a partner dance do you, um, want to be my partner?" Declan asked.
"Is the big bad boy nervous?" I teased lightly.
"Yes I am."
"I'd love to be." I watched as a smile spread across his face. "Last one inside is a rotten egg!" I pushed him then ran inside and up the stairs.
The dance was complicated but it looked great. There was a part where I was launched in the air and had to flip then land in Declan's arms. It was a lot of fun. Declan was strong enough to throw me high enough in the air.
Jessi had gotten a ride with someone in our crew so it was just me and Declan. He turned on the stereo and I sung along with Metallica's Enter Sandman.
"You know this song?" he asked.
"Just because you think girls are always super girly doesn't mean I am," I replied.
"Do you mind coming with me to The Hunger Games tonight? Mom is making me go with April and I'd like someone over the age of eight to talk to," he asked.
"Like oh my god I would, like, totally love to see that movie, it's supposed to be, like, so good," I replied in an airhead voice. He laughed at that. "Actually I will though."
"Great. I'll pick you up later. You can bring your younger siblings if you want. I'm pretty sure they are friends," he said.
"James and April are the same age. Isabella is a year younger."
"That's who April has a crush on!" he shouted. I was laughing so hard I was crying. "Well here we are. I'll pick you guys up at six thirty?"
"sounds good. Thanks for the ride."
I ran inside then told Isabella and James what was going on. They went to get ready and then we waited downstairs. The car ride was interesting. James and April argued the whole way there, Declan kept teasing them and Isabella kept asking Declan annoying questions. I sat ack and smiled. They left me alone
The movie was okay. I would rather read the book again though. April and Isabella had managed to become best friends in the few hours they were together, and man were they annoying. I sat rubbing my temples while Declan laughed and James punched the back of my seat.
"Well goodnight Selena," Declan said as he and April walked us up to the house.
"Are you going to kiss her?" April asked.
"Oh go kiss your boyfriend!" Declan exclaimed.
"Declan and Selena sitting in a tree K-i-s-s-i-n-g!" the three kids sung. I clamped my hands over my sibling's mouths and went inside.
"Goodnight Declan."
"Selena?" my mother called.
"Yes mom?" I replied.
"Jason Keller wants you to meet him at the park in twenty minutes," she said. Oh great, I have to go deal with him.
I was alone at the park for awhile. A rustling came from the bushes. Jason ran out and punched me in the gut.
"Your brother...stole....my girlfriend!" he shouted in between punches. I was on the ground with his weight on me and then suddenly it was gone. Declan was holding him against a tree. He quickly punched him. He let go when Jason passed out.
"Selena! Shh. It's okay now. Let's get you home," Declan whispered. Something knocked Declan out of the way and held him back. Jason was on top of me punching me again. I whimpered and curled in a ball. I saw Josh come charging down the street and throw Jason away.
Josh went to pick me up and I flinched from him. He looked hurt. When he came closer I moved away. Declan came beside me.
"Selena sweetie. I'm not going to hurt you ever. Let me carry you home," Declan whispered. I nodded and he picked me up.
I didn't go to school for a week after that and the only guy I let near me were Declan and James.
