Chapter 4

Bad News

We walked back into the penthouse first thing Daniel did was turn on the TV. I froze it was the news and every now and then the capitol interview the families of the tributes.

The camera was fixed on my home with my 5 year old little sister and 9 year old brother standing outside the house crying. A capitol lady standing next to them “You’re the siblings of Alexandra Holt right? What’s wrong” She asked in her high squeaky voice

“Our parents and elder brother were just killed in a mining accident” Rush whimpered

“So where does that leave you to?” The lady asked

While I let out a scream of horror, no my parents weren’t they couldn’t be dead. Tears poured down my face, I felt warm arms grab me from behind, turn me around and pull me into a tight hug.

“T-t-they can’t be d-d-d-d-d-d-dead” I wailed

“I’m so sorry” Dan whispered

I turned my gaze back to the screen in time to see 2 peacekeepers dragging a kicking Rush and carrying a crying Fern. I watched hopelessly as they carried them away, Fern sucking her long blonde plaits tears dripping down her pale face while Rush fought tooth and nail to return to his sisters side.

“They’re going to put them in the Orphanage place aren’t they” I cried

“Don’t worries they’ll be out soon, someone will adopt them they are just too cute to stay there” Dan smiled

“Yeah and maybe if I win they’ll let me take them back home” I mumbled

“Doubt it you’re not of age” Haymitch appeared

Tears filled my eyes at the thought of them growing up in the horrid place.

3rd Person P.O.V

“See what you did” Daniel spat at Haymitch as Alex began to cry horrid thoughts of what those people could and would do to her siblings.

Daniel turning angrily away from Haymitch and picked Alex up whispering soft and reassuring words into her ears, Daniel felt sorry for the little 12 year old girl.

Dan P.O.V

Alex was about to be thrown into the games knowing that her adoptive parents and elder brother were dead, her birth family hated her and if she didn’t survive her younger siblings would most likely die, a lot of responsibility for a 12 year old, especially a very stubborn although sweet 12 year old who lived in district 12.

I thought about it myself who needs me back at home;

Parents – no they don’t care about me

Friends – barely have any not that they cared about me

Siblings – none

It settled it no one needed me, expect people needed Alex, they needed her help, her support and I think one group of people needed her forgiveness. I lay a sleeping Alex down under her covers and hurried out of her room to find Haymitch.

“Haymitch” I walked over to him and sat down. “I need a favour”

“What”

“I need you to protect Alex do whatever you can to protect her, make sure she has dozens of sponsors, I’m going to try and protect her in the game but I need your help as well” I demanded

“You want me to protect this little girl” Haymitch turns around and points a remote at the TV and it turns on. A slideshow begins, to flash throw images of a little blonde girl.

The girl is sitting on top of a boy around 5 years older than her, Alex is chasing a little boy then it changes to a video of Alex around 5 running forward and tackling a boy around 10 maybe 11 to the ground, it changes to another video Alex around 7 tripping over a 12 boy as he walked down the stairs and Alex roaring her head off with laughter.

I began to laugh and sigh watching a younger Alex play pranks on her elder brother, dress her younger brother in flowers and teach her little sister to walk.

“How did you get that?”

We spun around Alex was standing in the door way hands on hips and furious expression across her usually light face.

“The Capitol place cameras in the districts hidden well but there” Haymitch shrugged

“Why?”

“That is just a stupid question Alex” Haymitch said flatly

A murderous expression slammed onto Alex’s face she took a step forward towards Haymitch fists clenched before a dawning look crossed her face, she figured it out. Alex blushed and hurried out of the room.

“Haymitch how did you get those images so quickly” I frowned as a 3 year old Alex held a little knife before throwing it out the door.

“I knew you’d ask me” Haymitch shrugged

“Why show me these pictures and videos though” I frowned

“Because I am trying to show you Alexandra doesn’t need protecting she’s a smart, strong girl and has been like that since she was a little girl” Haymitch sighed and stood up leaving.

“Oh” I said softly, I turned to turn off the TV and saw a 4 year old Alex knocking her father to the ground. Maybe Haymitch was right for once maybe Alex didn’t need looking after, after all.
