Elena was driving home after closing her shop. It was later than other days because the shop was full of customers till night. She knew it was late and her little daughter Rose is waiting for her. But she couldn’t close the shop because she needed money more than ever. Rose was going to start school after a week. She wanted to fulfill her every need so that Rose won’t feel the absence of her father.
Elena switched on the radio of her black color old car. It announced the time as 11.30pm and she knew it would take thirty more minutes for her to reach home. She listened to some of Katy Perry’s songs while thinking about how cold it was inside the car. Suddenly the radio stopped and lights were flickering. She cursed and tried to fix the light. But the light went off and the engine stopped sinking her into the endless darkness.
“Oh! Damn it!” she cursed again. “Please, please start” she tried to start the engine.
“Stop kidding me, stupid car!” she screamed while trying so hard to start the engine again. But it didn’t work.
“Okay. Let me see if there’s someone’s house nearby” Elena told to herself and got down from the car. She switched on the flash light and looked around. But there was no house except for the huge trees surrounded by bushes. She sighed and got into the car again to try starting the engine. But it was useless. 'seems like I’m gonna spend the night here’ she thought and brought her phone to call her mother to tell that she won’t make it home today. She dialed the number and waited until someone pick it.
“Hello!” a small voice asked. “Hello! Is that you sweetie?” Elena asked.
“Mommy… why aren’t you home? I’m sleepy.” She said.
“I know Rose. But mommy’s having a trouble with our old car again.” She said.
“Oh! When will you come?” Rose asked.
“Soon. Rose can you give the phone to your grandma?” Elena said.
“Elena, where are you?” her mother asked.
“Mom I won’t be able to come home today.” She said.
“Why? Are you alright?”
“Yes mom. I’m okay. But my car broke down in the middle of the road and there’s no one nearby. I couldn’t walk home because it’s too dark. So, I’m gonna stay here until morning.” Elena said.
“Are you sure? Will you be okay?” her mother asked. Elena could tell that she is worrying about her.
“Yes mom there’s nothing to worry” she said.
“Don’t you want me to come and pick you up?” her mother asked again.
“No mom. Rose is already sleepy and she would be afraid if you told her.” She said.
“Okay. But be careful. Remember to lock the doors and windows.” Her mother said.
“Okay mom. I’ll come home in the morning.” Said Elena and disconnected the call.
She locked the doors and windows and adjust the sheet so that she could sleep until morning. But she couldn’t sleep long. Someone began to scream.
“Mommyyyyyyyy………….. Help me” a little girl was screaming. Elena woke up and listened.
“Mommy please, please.” She was crying now.
Elena looked around. There was no one. But the scream began again. “Please help me. He’s gonna kill me.” she cried.
Elena’s heart started beating fast. She recognized the voice. It was Rose. It was the voice of Rose. She was shaking from anxiety.
“Rose…” Elena called her daughter. “Mommy, I’m here. Please help me.” She said.
‘Oh god! My daughter’ she told to herself and got down from the car immediately grabbing her phone.
“Rose, I’m coming. Where are you?” she called again. “I don’t know it’s dark.” She said.
The sound came from the right side of the road. She walked that way. There was no one but the huge trees everywhere and she couldn’t find rose. She was creeping through the trees calling her daughter’s name.
“Rose…, where are you? Elena called again. But no one answered.
“Rose …” she screamed because she was afraid that something would happen to her.
“I’m right behind you mommy.” Someone whispered to her ear.
