The Cemetery

Chapter 9

          Paige heard voices.  Voices of people she had known all her life. Not the strange voices she heard in her nightmares. Her eyelids felt heavy like she didn't want to open them.  She tried to move her hand. But suddenly stopped because it was painful. She stopped trying to move and listen to the voices.

"She'll wake up now . but you have to be careful Mrs. Gilbert. If she got hurt again like this I'm afraid we won't have anything to save her. " this time it was a stranger.

"Where am I?  why is he talking like I hurt myself?" Paige thought.

She opened her eyes slowly and suddenly blinded from the bright sunlight coming from the window. She turned her head to avoid the sunlight and saw her grandma talking to a tall man wearing a white coat.  She recognized him as a doctor because there was a stethoscope in his hands. 

"Why am I in a hospital? "She thought looking at the bright hospital walls.  She noticed an extraordinary lump covered  from a black colour blanket on the couch which was kept in a corner of the hospital room.   She tried to figure out what is was. Then she saw a foot covered from a black colour men's converse popping out from the blanket.

It must be Bruce.  She thought. The doctor left the room and her grandma turned towards her bed.

"Oh darling! You are awake." She almost screamed. There were tears in hr eyes.

"What happened mama? " paige asked.

"You don't remember? " grandma asked her.

She remembered it.  Everything from that awful day played played in front of her like a movie.  Jayden leaving her, the woman, the pain,  cracking bones and endless darkness surrounding her.

"No grandma.  I don't know what happened? " she said.  Who would believe her? Probably no one. So everyone will think that she's crazy and put her in a mental asylum for the rest of her life.  So she didn't tell her anything. 

"That's unfortunate. "Grandma looked disappointed.

Paige looked at her leg.  It was covered from white bandages as well as her right hands.

"How long have i been like this grandma? " she asked.

"A whole week" grandma answered looking  at her sadly.

"Can I walk? " paige asked eventhough she already knew the answer.

"You'll walk using handcuffs.  But they said you are a fast healer.  So you'll be able to walk naturally in week or two" grandma said.

"Oh" paige said looking down and worrying how she's going to catch up with school work.

"Honey,  I have to do some paper works before you discharge.  So wait here.  I'll be back. " grandma gave her a quick kiss and walked out.  Paige knew it was not only the paper work but she wanted to cry. She felt sorry for grandma.  paige hated it because she couldn't go to her and assure her that everything's gonna be okay.

Her thoughts were disturbed by a loud snoring sound came from the couch. She saw the blanket was now moving. First a hand and then a head withdark brown hair crept out.  It wasn't Bruce.  It was the last person she wanted to see at that time. He still didn't recognize that someone is watching him. He yawned and sat on the couch still looking sleepy. Paige didn't want him to see that she's watching him. She shut her eyes tightly but carefully open one eye lid to see what was happening. 

He waited two or three more minutes and got up from the couch.  He looked around to see if there's someone.  And then came towards her bed.

    'Og my god! He's gonna know that I'm awake."paige thought panicking.

He was staring at her then waved his hands in front of her face.  She felt the breezing air on her skin.  But she stayed still.  She heard his foot steps going away from the bed.  Paige waited a few seconds and slowly opened her eyes.  He was turning his back to her and she was shocked to see what was happening.  He was taking off his clothes. First he took off his black and white polo  shirt.  She almost gulped when she saw the strong muscles on his back and suddenly closed her eyes again after realizing that she was staring. But again her eyes and mind betrayed her rebelling with the hormones dripping from her brain.  She opened eyes.  He was going to take off his pants.  He unbuttoned the first button and the second one.  There was only  one button left when she heard her own voice coming out from her mouth yelling him to stop.

        Jayden jumped like something burned him.  His eyes were widen from surprise and didn't even notice that he's still half naked. 

"Thank god!  You woke up! " he said loudly. 

"Oh...  Ah...  Can you wear that properly? " trying to keep her eyes away from his underwear which was showing off a lump in the middle.

"Oh" he panicked and quickly turned around to button up his pants again and put on the t shirt which was lying on the floor. 

"Were you staring? " he asked.

"Do you think I have nothing else to watch waking up after a week as a totally disabled person? " she asked smirking.

"That's right.  I forgot it.  But the disabled parts are only your hands and legs.  Not eyes. " he let out a chuckle. 

"Will you shut up? " Paige snapped  giving him the the angriest look she could wear at the time. 

"Paige... "Jayden said.  It almost sounded like a whisper.   paige looked at him and saw he's walking to her.  He was staring into her eyes.  She looked at his eyes to understand what he was thinking but it was complicated.

"What...? " she asked.

"I'm so sorry Paige.  I wouldn'd leave you that day if i knew something like this would happen. " Jayden said holding her hands. 

"It's okay Jayden.  It's not your fault. " paige said trying to ignore the warmth of his touch which send electric waves through her veins.

"You have no idea how I felt after Alyssa called me and  told me that you were attacked. I will kill whoever dis this to you.  I swear." Jayden said.  Paige felt his fingers  tighten around her fingers.

"Jayden" Paige said smoothly. He looked at her.

" I was wrong that day" she said looking down.

"About what? " Jayden looked at her.

"Um...  About having feelings about you" she said blushing.

Jayden didn't say anything.  He was staring at her like he just saw a zombie.

"I...  I want to apologize.  I ws having this um...  This conflict since the first day I met you.  But I was a fool to ignore the fact that I like you. " Paige suddenly stopped after realizing what she just said.  She covered her mouth and felt her cheeks are burning.

"Did you  just say that you  like me? " Jayden asked still looking pale. 

"Think you hear me correctly"she whispered.

"Oh" he said.

"Oh Paige! " He said again.

He lowered on to her.  Paige thought he was going to kiss her.  She closed her eyes expecting to feel his lips on her lips. He didn't kiss her but wrapped hos arms around her tightening her still weak body into his chest.  Paige felt like she was going to melt.  But she liked his warmth.  Finally she got someone by her side.  Someone except her grandma.  She smiled and closed her eyes sucking into his strong scent of men's perfume.
