Theres an overwhelming feeling of emptiness inside Kai that cannot be shaken. Its almost like he isn't alive. Everyday is the same for him, and he mindlessly goes through the motions like a member of the living dead.

He wakes early in the morning while his cell mate Bruza is still snoring, and the birds outside his window happily chirp away. He lays there for a few hours, and usually spends the time reading. When his cell is eventually unlocked he showers and has breakfast along with everyone else. At 8:00 am he starts work which consists of making office furniture. The money he earns is meant to pay for phone calls and toiletries. Things that are never hard to come by thanks to his boys and younger brother (though he has never spoken about  it ), who make sure that his account is topped up with more money that he'll ever need. Kai often wonders if there will come a day when their money stops coming in, and he'll be left to fend for himself with his pathetic wages.

Lunch is followed by more work and then the inmates are given free time. Sometimes he calls some of the people he left in the outside world. Like his ex Taina. Which isn't often as it frustrates him to hear her silvery voice, or picture her slim thick body wrapped and not be able to touch it. On most days he works out.

When free time is over Kai goes back to the cell he shares with Bruza who's given name (which Kai found out after his first few weeks inside) is Nikesh. He has deep set eyes that lay against warm skin the colour of rusty metal. And a typical Birmingham accent that causes him to elongate most of his words, which always linger in the air longer than necessary. Kai would find his cell mate's accent irritating but he didn't speak very often. They both remained social enough to avoid causing offence to anyone, but reserved enough to stay out of trouble. Most of the time. There used to be a small tv in Kai's cell that added a little colour to his dull life. But when Bruza decided to give a fellow inmate a black eye it was confiscated.

Kai hated being in prison but saw no point in trying to get out. He had no way of proving that he didn't kill Akelle, and even if he did he would be reluctant to actually do it. Things never end well for snitches.

Kai often imagined what he would do if he got out, and always came to the conclusion that he couldn't ever live a normal life. He wasn't a killer but if he ever ran into tp he would quickly become one. And if that didn't put him back in prison, trapping would. He barely had any GCSEs to his name and his crb was dirtier than the slimy tiles in the prison's shower room. This was it for him. This was his life.

Like always, when 7am arrived Kai's cell was unlocked. He tucked the Marlon James book he was reading under his pillow, made his bed and headed for the showers. As he walked he lifted his arm to scratch his coarse beard and was hit with his own stench. Heavy rain pelted his window throughout the night but there was still an unbearable heat that torched his body and caused him to drench himself in sweat. The sound of splashing water and loud chatter could be heard as Kai strolled down the corridor leading to the shower room. It was then that she appeared suddenly, blocking his path. And he somehow knew that for once his day was going to be different.

Officer Akinyi hadn't been able to look Kai in his cold grey eyes since the day he first entered the prison. Kai was sure she was scared of him, as she became fidgety and nervous whenever she was in his presence. He found it amusing that she was supposed to keep him in check. He looked her over, she was short and slightly chubby, and guessed that he could probably lift her over his head with ease.

"Officer?" He raised a thick eyebrow.

She took some time to drink Kai in. She thought he looked like death personified. Frightening  yet enticing. She was hypnotised by his rugged beauty and almost forgot that she wasn't allowed to be.
