When you think of this rhyme you probably think of a nice little garden, right? I mean I know I used to. Well you won't anymore, either, because I'm about to ruin that image for you.
This nursery rhyme actually has pretty bloody roots. You see, this nursery rhyme is actually about torturing and killing. It refers to Queen Mary I of England, who was nicknamed Bloody Mary.
Her time as queen was spent executing protestants by the hundreds. Im sure you can see where the nickname comes from.
The silver bells and cockle shells are torture devices that helped her earn this dark, and morbid nickname.
The pretty maids all in a row refers to a device that was like the gulitone, which was called the "the maiden"
