There are multiple different tales about the origin of Jack and Jill. The most popular version has to do with French royalty.
So we all know the first part of the nursery rhyme-
Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after. But there's also another verse that goes:
Up Jack got, and home did trot,
As fast as he could caper,
He went to bed to mend his head,
With vinegar and brown paper. Now I'm just going to say now, that this rhyme with its origins should really be nowhere near kids.
So the part where the explanation really begins is where the rhyme says~
Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling afterMost people believe that the rhyme about Jack falling down and breaking his crown refers to the king of France, Louis XVI, who was beheaded during the French Revolution.
And who was Jill you might ask? Well Jill would be his wife Marie Antionette, whose head came tumbling after.
And if you think about it, when they lost their heads, in a way their crowns were broken.
The second part was just added to make the rhyme more happy, i mean that first part is really a downer, not that it stops kids from singing it anyways.
