Amelia thought for sure the air was being sucked out of the elevator it was so hard to catch her breath. Being so close to Logan she could see the flecks of gold in his green eyes was making her head spin.

"You may not believe this," he whispered. "But I've missed you. The hardest thing I had to do was walk away from you. As you know, this isn't an opportunity I could say no to."

"Saying no to me was easy though, wasn't it?" She was surprised by how much that moment still hurt her.

His arms tightened around her. "It's not like that. You don't understand."

"Then explain in. Quickly."

"Once I knew what The Castle was all about I knew it wouldn't be long before you were asked to join. There was never any doubt in my mind you were good enough to be here. Then we could be together again."

"You assume I would be able to forgive you for what you did."

"Baby, I had faith in our love."

"And that faith was destroyed when you so casually, and easily pushed me aside."

"I never pushed you aside; you've never been far from me. Every day, every hour, every second of the day you were with me."

"You had the luxury of knowing that 'maybe' one day we would see each other again, then at that point, we could continue our relationship. But all I had was your words that you were leaving me. I had nothing to hold onto."

Logan shook his head. "You can't tell me there's no hope for us. I don't believe it."

"You should." She narrowed her eyes at him.

His eyes flashed with an unrecognizable emotion a second before his lips pressed down on hers. She wanted to feel nothing, she prayed she'd feel nothing, but she didn't. She felt everything. She still loved the bastard. That didn't mean she was going to make things easy for him. Moving her hand along his body she pinched his side. She wanted to do more damage, but that was all the small confined space would allow.

Abruptly, he pulled away from her and ended the kiss.

"I did not give you permission," she hissed. "You lost that right when you walked out on me."

"I might have lost the right, but I'll get it back. I promise you."

"This isn't the time to get into battle as to which one of us is more stubborn. Those doors are going to open any second now, and we have absolutely no idea what we are walking into," she said.

"Do you trust me." Logan's voice was thick with emotion.

She paused before answering. "When it comes to work, yes. With my heart, no."

"I'll work on the rest later. I will get us out of this."

"We," she corrected. "We will get us out of this. Don't go pulling that lone wolf crap on me."

Logan's lips twitched. "Now, if you'll excuse me." He started shifting and rubbing up against her. "I'd really like to get my gun in my hand."

Doing her best not to moan she decided two can play that game and thrust her hips towards him and arched her back, effectively shoving her breasts in his face in order to get her gun. Feeling it's weight in her hand, she felt immediately better, although she didn't like the fact her other hand held the book, which meant she had to focus on what she was doing.

"Why did you bring that thing?"

"I don't know," she said. "It felt out of place. A Shakespeare book in a minimalist, modern space? It didn't fit."

"You know you might end up having to leave it behind, right?"

"You worry about getting us out of here, I'll worry about the book."

He nodded, and the elevator finally came to a stop. They both braced for the doors to slide open and to be attacked, but nothing happened. After a quick glance outside the doors, Logan motioned her to follow. Quickly, hugging the old brick wall, they walked carefully in the dim light to the first alcove they could find.

"Looks like The Castle isn't the only one who wants to be underground," she whispered.

"Yeah, any idea what this is?"

"If there were tracks I would say we were in the abandoned subway tunnels, but there aren't any."

"Maybe this hooks up with them," Logan whispered. He tapped the button on his wrist. "Daniel, you here?"

They both waited for a response. There was nothing.

"I don't think it's going to work down here; these com systems are not made for this distance. That elevator might have been slow, but we still are pretty far underground."

"We need to find a better hiding space so we can figure out what to do and see what is around."

Logan nodded. "Stay here." He silently ran up the tunnel to see what was around the corner, where there was light coming from. She kept her ears alert for any sounds that would mean someone was coming and they might be discovered. When she saw him motion for her, she quickly followed. As soon as she was next to him, he grabbed her hand and pulled her behind him, weaving his way through the large wooden crates in what appeared to be a storage room. When he got to the back wall he pointed to the dark corner. "There. This will buy us some time to think."

Sitting down she pulled out her phone and hoped she'd have some kind of signal down here. "One bar, better than nothing, right?" Quickly she pulled up a search engine and looked up schematics of the old subway lines.

"Excellent," she said. "I need to study these and try to find out which line is the closest one to determine which way we should go."

"We have a fifty/fifty chance of picking the right one."

"I want better odds than that. Go." She nodded to the front of the room. "Make sure we don't get caught."

When a screech caught her attention, her head popped up and saw Logan opening one of the crates. "Stop it," she hissed.

"What am I supposed to do? We're never going to have this kind of opportunity again."

"Fine, but be quiet. For all you know it's toilet paper."

"I don't know why anyone would need this much toilet paper."

"Doomsday." She tried to ignore him as she calculated the distance between the different abandoned lines and their location. "Hey Logan," she said.

"Yeah."

"You can still pick a lock, right?"

"Please, can I still pick a lock?" He patted one of his pockets on his pants. "I always carry my tools with me. Besides," he pulled something from another pocket. "We have bigger things to think about. Bring me your book."

Amelia stood up and walked over to him. "What did you find?"

"These." Pointing to the open crate, there were other books by classic authors, all genres. "Poe, Austen, Twain, Yeats. We need these plus the one I grabbed. It has to mean something."

"It does, and I'm starting to get that bad feeling that we need to get out of here, like now."

"You don't have to tell me twice," she said. "Let's go."

They made their way out to the main tunnel, then turned left. There was just enough light in the tunnel for them to see where they were going and not trip. The eerie silence enveloped them, and they kept waiting for something to jump out at them. After about a half an hour walking they came to what she suspected was the end of the tunnel that wasn't part of the old subway system. Sure enough, there was a door leading to that, and then they'd be able to make it to the surface.

Logan dropped to his knees and within seconds had the locked picked. They quickly went through the door and silently closed it behind them. With a sigh of relief, they turned their flashlights on and immediately illuminated a person standing there with a baseball bat high over his head.
