An inhuman scream bounced off the walls of the tunnel. The person who was holding the bat let it drop to the floor, and his body followed suit as he covered his eyes with his hands.
Logan grabbed her hand, and they raced down the tunnel, the light from their flashlights dispensing the shadows. Leaping over piles of debris and ducking under fallen beams they didn't look back to see if anything chased them.
"Hold up," Amelia panted and slowed to a stop. "I think we're almost there, let me check." Pulling out her phone she pulled up her last map and nodded. "Yeah, just a little further. Think we could walk at a brisk pace this time?"
"I don't want to be down here much longer." His lips formed a straight line.
"Trust me, neither do I."
It took everything Amelia had not to give into the chill that was running down her spine. She felt like someone was lurking behind her, breathing down her neck, waiting to attack her. When they arrived at the door that would lead to their freedom Logan dropped to his knees and started to pick the lock. Amelia turned around and kept sweeping her light back and forth trying to see if anything hid in the darkness.
"Dammit," Logan hissed.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"A little rusty?"
"Something is rusty, and it's not me. I don't know the last time this lock was used. Six decades ago?"
"There's another door about a thousand feet down we can try."
"No, let's see if I can get this one. From the little I saw of the tunnel, it looks like there is a lot more debris going forward, which also means, a lot more room for people to hide. I like our chances here better."
"Then work your magic."
Logan went back to picking the lock, and she continued trying to make sure nothing snuck up on them. An odd sound started faintly to her right.
"Logan..."
"Yeah."
"I think we're going to have company soon. Someone is coming."
"I've almost got it."
Amelia whipped her light to the left when she heard a new sound and the hair on the back of her neck stood up. "Both sides now."
"Shit."
"Not what I want to hear."
"Me either. Is your weapon ready?" His voice was barely a whisper.
"Always." Taking a defensive stance, she took a deep breath and started sweeping back and forth with her flashlight, jerking back to another area when a new sound would emerge. It seemed like they were always a few seconds faster than her and were able to hide before she could get a good look at who was back there.
"Oh shit," she said. When she had moved her light to the right side, she saw a dozen people heading in their direction. Their heads were bent down, and they had a pale hand covering their eyes. Between their old, ravaged clothes that hung on their skin that showed every bone, she had a feeling they were trespassing on their territory.
Swinging her light to the left she saw there more of them on that side, and they were closing in on them. "Lo-" her word was cut off as an arm snaked around her waist and pulled her backward. She was whirled around and set on the ground. The slam of the steel door on the metal frame echoed loudly in the small space.
"Come on." He raced past her and up the stairs. "I completely destroyed that lock trying to get it open. That loud sound will only keep them back so long before they come through that door looking for us."
