The three of them sat in the back of a small coffee house, trying to hide from any prying eyes. "What are the two of you doing here together?" The furious whisper of Ted Rodgers, their former boss barely reached their ears.
"You know what we are a part of," Logan said. "We can't tell you anything else."
"Is it Jay-Six? Is he planning something? This is my city if he is I need to know how to protect it."
"I'm sorry Ted, we can't say anything," Amelia tried to soften the blow of not sharing anything with by giving him a smile.
"What are the odds of you running into us?" Logan's eyes narrowed on Ted's face. "This isn't a place you usually frequent."
"You don't know everything about me. One could say the same thing about the two of you. Out of all the hotels in New York City why did you show up at the one I was visiting?"
Silence filled the table for a minute before Logan resumed his questioning. "Talked to Bill lately?"
"Not since he called me to say he needed Amelia." Ted sat back against the wall of the book, and his eyes darted around the room.
Leaning forward Logan rested his elbows on the table. "What about new cases? Working on anything new?"
"I assume you are asking if there are any new cases that I'm not allowed to investigate? No, I don't have any of those at the time."
Amelia watched the exchange between the two men and wondered exactly what she was missing. There seemed to be a low level of hostility between the two of them. She had no idea what could have caused it.
"So," Ted said. "Are you two back together? I mean, now that you are working together again you can practically pick up where you left off."
Next to her she watched as Logan sat back in his seat and moved his hands to his lap. His knuckles turned white as he made fists. Now she was really curious as to what was going on between the men.
"Is it really any of your business?" Amelia folded her arms across her chest.
Ted sighed and looked at her, a slight flush warmed his cheeks. "I'm sorry, you're right. It isn't any of my business. I hope you both are doing well, and if you ever want to come back to the Bureau, we'd love to have you back on the team." He stood up and nodded to them before turning and walking away.
As soon as they were alone, Amelia turned to Logan. "What the hell was that all about?"
"I don't know what you're talking about." He took a sip of his coffee.
"Yes, you do, now talk. We're supposed to be a team; we can't have any secrets."
Logan sighed. "Fine. After I left the Bureau he got in contact with me. He wanted to let me know that I handled the situation with you completely inappropriately. He could see what you were going through and you weren't doing your best work. He wanted me to rectify the situation, I couldn't. End of story."
"And that's is? Nothing else?"
"Nothing else."
They stared at each other and Amelia tried to read him but the years apart had made it difficult. Once she knew this man almost as well as she knew herself. Now there were different nuances to him she had yet to figure out.
"Did you notice how he kept deflecting us from questioning him about anything?"
"Yeah," Logan said. "I did. It certainly makes me wonder what he might be hiding."
