The fire department and the police had arrived not too long after Sam hung up with his brother, and immediately took a look through Sylvie's apartment. However, they had found no trace of the fire Sam had expected. This left the younger Winchester more perplexed than he had been before, and he stood staring at the apartment building, eyes searching the exits from afar.
Beside him, Hazel sat shivering, wrapped in his jacket.
He gazed over, watching as she wiped away the lines of mascara that had dried on her face. Her eyes were glazed over, deep in thought. Since the moment they had arrived outside the building, she hadn't spoke a word. Just a gentle sniff or deep breath here and there, but no other sound came from her mouth. She had been far too quiet, and that alone frightened Sam.
"Dean's on his way," he spoke softly, sitting down beside her. She nodded, running a hand through her hair and sniffing. Sam bit his lip.
"I know this is a stupid question, but are you.. are you alright?" He asked, "you're not hurt or anything, are you?"
Hazel finally glanced at him, tears filling her eyes once more.
"Sylvie, she-"
"Excuse me, sir?" A loud, gruff voice interrupted Hazel's sentence. Sam looked up to see a police man with a graying beard and an unreadable expression.
"Are you the one who called the department?"
Sam nodded, "yes, that was me."
"You said you found the body of a young woman inside the apartment?" He asked, raising an eyebrow, reading from a small notepad that rested in his palm. Sam nodded once more, glancing over at Hazel.
"And, where was this body?" Sam couldn't be sure, but it sounded as if the officer believed Sam to be lying.
"In one of the bedrooms," Hazel put in, wiping her eyes and using the most confident voice she could muster. Sam turned around to see her standing, and carefully draped his arm around her shoulders to keep her steady.
"What brought you to her room at this hour?"
"She's my friend, she and I always check up on each other. I hadn't heard from her at all, so I used the spare key and let myself in," Hazel recounted, wrapping her arms around herself. Sam placed his hand on the small of her back and rubbed it gently.
"When was the last time you saw her alive?" The cop asked, eyeing the two people in front of him. Sam narrowed his eyes, not liking the way the cop was looking at Hazel.
"Yesterday," She sniffed, "she was just fine yesterday." Her eyes watered and she quickly turned to Sam, burying her face in his chest.
Sam squeezed his eyes shut as Hazel sobbed, her entire body shaking.
The cop cleared his throat, and Sam turned his attention back to the man in uniform.
"Well, as of right now, we haven't seen anything. There's no body in this apartment, we've searched it top to bottom, and there's no sign anyone, or anything, was ever in there. Dead or alive."
Hazel lifted her head, her eyes red and puffy.
"What?" She demanded, "that's impossible!"
Sam squeezed her shoulder gently.
"My friend was killed in that apartment, I saw her. We saw her!" Her voice was rising to more of a shout, and a few of the other tenants who had stayed outside glanced over.
"Ma'am, I'd advise you not to lose your temper. We're doing everything we can, but as of right now, there's no proof of a murder. We'll continue to look into it, but without a crime scene, there isn't much we can do."
Hazel looked at Sam, her eyes wide with shock. "Sam-"
"Officer, we know what we saw." He interrupted her, his eyes set on the man.
"I'm sorry guys. Really, I am. But without a case, there's no investigation." He scribbled something on a piece of paper, and handed it to Hazel. "If you find anything else, my partner and I will be in touch."
He nodded a goodbye, and rejoined his fellow officers in front of the car, leaving Sam and Hazel to their thoughts.
