As we walked up to the front porch I felt like I was being weighed down by boulders, there was a strange lump in my throat, and I felt all clammy. The porch needed a little TLC. The steps were creaky and old, with missing nails that made the corners rise, and holes that you had to avoid or the wood may have caved in completely. The door along with the window shutters were a yellowed white, the chips and decaying in the paint showed the wood underneath. The ceiling of the porch was hardly there, birds had nested there for what seemed like hundreds of years. When she opened the door you heard a loud squeal, as if the door hinges hadn't been greased since the house was built.
Every furniture piece was old. The sofas were an old red floral pattern, most likely velvet, with old wooden mahogany tables and shelves.
As we walked up the beautiful old staircase, I jumped to the sound of a door slamming shut.
"Was that your brother?" I felt my nerves slip the question out.
"Yeah, he must've smelled a pretty girl and hid in fright of his ugliness." She laughed out.
"Or he sensed an ugly girl and hid in fear." I laughed.
"You're gorgeous Alianna, don't you ever let anyone make you think you're not. Tonight is the clubs 10th year anniversary, everyone who's anyone will be there.. And we are going to find someone who agrees with me. Can I curl your hair?"
"Sure, I mean, I never have before."
"You're kidding me?!"
"No, I really don't do anything with my hair or face."
"Then you're in for a real treat! I'm going to do your hair and makeup to perfection."
Her room was the size of my living room, She had a king sized bed with red curtains around it like you seen in castles. An old style Vanity, with a brand new computer on it, and a big plasma TV mounted to the wall. It was spacious yet empty, but much more glamorous than my room.
I sat at the vanity for what seamed like hours, it was so uncomfortable. My head felt like it was on fire with the rollers in, and taking them out was so much worse. My hair seamed to have knotted around a few, making Rose yank on them to get them out.
"There! Now just let me give you a little color to that face." She pulled off my glasses and tucked back my bangs. "Just close your eyes until I say." She rubbed a weird liquid into my face, then another into my eyelid. "Open your eyes" she then took a small funky brush to my eye lashes.
"What is all this stuff?" I asked slightly nervous.
"Just the basics, Foundation, eyeliner and mascara. Do you have to wear your glasses? Or would you be blind without them?"
"Almost completely blind, and my mom can't afford the contacts my doctor had offered."
"It's a shame you have to keep those gorgeous hazel eyes covered up."
"No man would take a look at me anyways, I'm just a geek. I don't even have any friends, or know any guys."
"Prove it to me."
"Prove what?"
"Tonight. We'll see if guys just think of you as nerd." I nodded, "Good. If a guy talks to you tonight, you have to come out with me more often. Even if it means ditching school!" She winked.
"Deal." I don't even know why I didn't just say no. I didn't want to go out tonight. I had never actually spent time with anyone other than my mom since I was a kid.
"I kind of want to put you in heels." She snickered.
"No.. That is stepping out of my comfort zone." I frowned.
