Battle has been joined again, this time near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. 1862 had been a trying year for all of us but at least only 8 of us lay dead. We finally caught up to Braxton Bragg and his Confederate army and received a new field commander for the engagement; William Starke Rosecrans another officer from Ohio. The Confederates were lined up on a riverbank with outdated 1853 Enfield rifles little knowing that we would soon engage them with Henry repeating rifles. Eventually, battle was joined. Ethan and I shot round after round at the Rebs each recording 35 hits. Benjamin was on sniper duty, picking off any Confederate officers that came in sight. Chance was directing artillery towards the Confederate camps with 12 lb Napoleon cannons and decimating the ranks in the process. Though 7 of our regiment was cut down, all 4 of us once again survived. Of the 7 soldiers hit, only 3 were killed and the other 4 were injured by expended minié balls. We had also captured 300 Confederate prisoners for transport back to Washington DC. For our contribution to the battle, Frederick S Stumbaugh rewarded each of us to a promotion of lieutenant. The day gets even better for I was given leave to visit my beloved Lucy and our new daughter. May God save America!
