When I got up in the morning I looked in the mirror. I ran my fingers through my hair a few times to tame the snowball that was my hair. Mason lent me some sweatpants and a shirt to wear last night so I quickly changed back into my clothes. When I made myself look a decent as possible, I headed down stairs. Once again Mason was in the kitchen making food, "Do you always cook. Or dose Sinner do it sometimes?" I ask.
He looks over his shoulder at me and raises an eyebrow, "Sinner is not allowed in my kitchen. He burns everything, including water." He says, not a hint of joking in his voice. I burst into laughter as we hear footsteps coming down the stairs.
Sinner appears with a Fall Out Boy t-shirt on, along his leather jacket. Geez, did these two own a jacket that wasn't leather. He also had on black jeans and a pair of converse. I noticed Mason wearing a similar outfit, but his shirt was Batman. Both of them had their dark hair gelled into their usual style. I rolled my eyes at them both, of corn the would want to freak people out by looking almost the same on purpose. Sinner looked over at me, "what's so funny?" He asked raising an eyebrow.
I wipe a fake tear from my eye, "oh nothing, only that you can't cook to save your life" I say, giving him a smile. He gives me a playful glare and rolls his eyes, while Mason laughs. I look at them both before saying, " is there a day that goes by that you two don't have to dress the same as well as look the same?"
Mason turns around and the boys eye each other, "okay, I got dressed first so you're going to have go change," Mason said eyeing Sinner down. Sinner glared back and stomped up the stairs grumbling under his breath. When Sinner came back he was wearing a plain red t-shirt with a jean jacket. I smiled and sat on one of the stools.
I look at them for a second before asking, "so how do you like our school?" They both shrug. Mason sets three plates of eggs and toast on the table. We all sit down and they begin eating, while I once again just sit starring at the food.
For a few minutes it's silent before Mason says something, "is something wrong? I mean you didn't eat last night or this morning. Wait are you vegan or something?"he says.
I smile and shake my head. "Nothing is wrong, just not very hungry." I say.
I hear Sinner put down his fork while I stare at my lap, "Bull shit." I hear him say. I look up in surprise, not sure if I heard him correctly. "There is something wrong Skyler, you think we can't tell? You don't take care of yourself, and you know how I know? I held you last night, I could feel the bones sticking out of your skin. I only have ideas of what you hide under your long sleeve shirts all the time. So what's wrong, what happened that's so bad that you can't even take care of yourself? Does Mac even know? We are your friends Skyler, these are the things you should tells us. We can help you, but only if we know what you need help." He says
I stand up and shake my head, I look at Mason. I can see the questions swirling in his eyes, but thankfully, unlike Sinner, he doesn't say anything. "Maybe I don't want help." I say quietly. I see Sinner soften a little, and open his mouth to say something. I cut home off before he could speak, "If this was something I could just, tell people, I would. But it's not, it's something I can't go to anyone with, not you, not Mac, not anyone. The only person that I would ever really talk to is gone. They're gone, and they're never coming back." I said, my voice cracking a little. "I'm alone, there are people around me but that doesn't make me any less alone. But I wouldn't expect you to understand. I have to find my own way through this world, because I can't trust anyone els to help me. I don't have a home, and I probably never will. So no, I don't take care of myself, because I'm not worth being cared for." I say. By now I breathing heavy. Things I have never been able to say to any one just flew out of my mouth before I could stop them. There are so many people who I could have said it to, but it was the two new and confusing boys.
My eyes begin to fill with tears. I have never let my emotions get the best of me, but since these two came into the picture, I have been letting out everything that should have been let out years ago. Before anyone can do anything I turn and run. I run out the door and down the pavement, not looking back. I don't know if they will look for me or not but I don't really care. Luckily I left most of my stuff at school yesterday, so if I decide to go today I only missing my old math book and a few note pads. I don't stop running till I reach the forest, when I do I slow to a walk. I stop when I found my tree. 'Never is too strong a word for such a short life' my moms favorite motto. She was always so positive, but all I ever seem to say any more is never. I remember they day she brought me out here and carved this on the tree, she said I will always be our tree. Always. Her favorite word was always, she love the possibilities that were in that one word.
After some time I look at my watch, if I leave now I can make lunch. I felt bad missing my first few classes, but I needed some time, and I sure my teachers would understand.
When I arrive at the school the bell rings for lunch. I run to my locker to grab my bag. Sinners words ring in my head, he was right, I don't take care of myself. Even now, I wasn't planning on eating lunch, even though I didn't eat breakfast or dinner. Honestly I haven't eaten since breakfast yesterday, it wasn't healthy and I knew it, but I didn't care, I wasn't hungry, I was never hungry. I walk into the lunch room and sit with Mac. She looks up when I sit down, "where were you?" She signed to me. I shake my head, "I just had a really rough morning, I went to see moms tree," I signed back. I glanced around for the twins, I felt bad. They had been so nice to me and I just snapped, they were trying to take care of me and I yelled at them. I'm not used to people caring so much, and I wouldn't be surprised if they don't want to talk to me anymore.
I see them walk into the lunchroom, Mason looks slightly annoyed, but when I look over at Sinner he looks full on pissed about something, with a capital P. I worry if they're upset because of what happened this morning. Just as I'm about to look away I catch Sinner's eyes. Any evidence that he was angry disappeared and he smiles at me, Mason gives me a small wave and they both sit down. Sinner sits next to me, "hey are you okay? I'm sorry, I didn't think and I snapped, I was just worried about you." He rushed out.
I smile a little, "Sinner, you did nothing wrong, I'm the one who should apologizing, to both of you." I say. Mac gives me an odd look, "just talking about something that happened this morning" I signed to her. I knew she wouldn't ask, she smiled and nodded. Mason smiled along with the rest of us.
"Why don't we all just call a truce? This morning never happened," he said. We all nodded in agreement. Mason tosses an apple at my head, "I'm still not letting go the fact that I'm not sure when you last ate though, so you're going to eat that apple." He said, not leaving and room for argument.
Sinner nodded in agreement, he slung an arm around me in a casual manor. Mac raised her eyebrows at me, giving me a suggestive smile. "This means nothing, we are just friends" I sign it her. She just shrugged giving me a look that says 'whatever you say'. We all sit in silence for a while, I eat my apple like I was told and everything felt okay for those few minutes.
Suddenly a loud growl rips through the room. Everyone turns to look at were it came from. A boy I had never seen at this school before is standing at the entrance to the lunchroom with a look that could kill. "Mine"
