"is it a mutual feeling"

The day after Peter came over for lunch was Friday, and I had begged my mom to let me stay home for one more day. She wasn't having it, so I trudged my way with Peter to school. I hadn't seen Peter since he left back to school; even though he said he would stop by at night. I wasn't expecting much since the night is usually when Peter bails the most.

"Did I miss much yesterday, homework and gossip wise?" I asked as we crossed 45th street.

"Well, we just continued working on that lab in Bio- I have notes, so you don't have to worry- and señora assigned some online homework. I'm not sure about your other classes," Peter kicked a cup across the road.

I huffed, homework was usually the bane of my existence, but lately I've been able to convince Peter to help me with most of my lessons. Peter and I walked in silence the rest of the way to school and sat down in Biology together.

"Alright class," Mr. Matthews started from the front of the classroom, his voice already void of any emotion. "Get with your partners from yesterday, we are going to continue the lab. Please try not to screw up, I don't want to deal with helping anyone today." He sat down turning towards his computer doing who-knows-what.

"Okay computer boy, what's the plan?" I slid my chair closer to Peter, close enough that our shoulders were touching, but I just looked down at the lab sheet. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Peter staring at me but not taking any steps to move away.

"Uh- we need to- um," Peter blinked and looked towards the lab sheet. Half of his was already filled out. "We are just studying cells from different organisms right now. I've already finished the cork and the onion, so all we have left is the frog blood and the piece of celery." Peter slid his sheet towards me, and I started to copy his work while he set up the microscope and last two slides. He leaned over the microscope and fiddled with lens to get it in focus. Slowly, I lost focus on copying and started to focus on Peter. It had been almost a month since I've known Peter, and him and Ned are my only friends. Peter was so focused on the microscope, he didn't look up once as he took notes across the sheet.

"April," Peter snapped his fingers in front of my face. "Here, you can take a look at the slide."

I leant over the microscope, "We should go see a movie tonight, I think we should see something funny." I scribbled down some random nonsense about cells and their shape before turning towards Peter.

Peter nodded his head, changing the slides for the last time, "Yeah, that sounds fun. I think Ned has something with his family tonight, though."

"That's fine," it was barely fine. Would this be considered a date now? Probably not because it's just Peter who had been my best friend since I moved here. My best friend that I only have platonic feelings for. I really needed someone that isn't Peter or Ned to talk to about Peter.
