Soon Arthur is driving as fast as possible down the brightening coastline to the spot that everyone fears. His car passes tenuously near to the edge of the looming hillsides. Telephone wires flash by him hauntingly as he rolls around the curves of the coast with his top down. The salty scent of the sea surrounds him in the midmorning climes, and gulls soar high overhead.

He draws nearer to the trail leading to the forbidden lookout, that which he would finally venture into. The sky opens up in front of him with each open space along the road, flaring with a hue of dystopia. His blue eyes open up to the panorama of the woods below him, and the dark greene of trees that begin to line the edge of the high cliffs.

At long last, his heart races faster as he pulls over to the gates at the start of the path. He doesn't feel fear anymore, only a blend of anticipation and a strange sense of welcome. The kind felt at the completion of a long journey. He ignores the warning signs along the jagged, winding, trail on which he walks, as the sun shifts its place along the sky like a beacon.

After pausing for an indistinguishable amount of time for his incantation and disposing of materials, he continues on, still further into the seemingly fine line of wood. The few trees seem to either have multiplied or become more dense, even though this defies logic. After the incantation is completed and the materials are thrown over the trees to tumble into the ocean below, Arthur arrives at the edge.

On the cliff's edge, the valley of plastic people and the matrix of trees melt away into a heavenly envelope. His soul spreads its wings, and his old life is shattered.

The difference upon arrival couldn't be described as either gradual or sudden, but more similar to the way one wakes in the morning...just here... and then gone.
The perspective shifts from physical to non-physical.

     His soul feels no pain.
