Alison's POV
"Honey, the library is going to close in another 5 minutes," Mrs. Peach informed me, holding a bunch of keys in her hand.
I looked up from the book I was deeply engrossed in and glanced at my watch. 9:55pm. My roommate, Tori was going to kill me.
"Shit," I muttered to myself, gathering my books. "I'll return this next week," I told Mrs. Peach, pointing to the book, Brain by Robin Cook, before stuffing it in my bag.
"Sure, honey," said Mrs. Peach with a smile. "Now you hurry up home. It can get a bit nasty, walking all alone in the dark, dark night."
I smiled politely and walked out of the library, holding my medical guide, into the cool London air. I sent a text message to Tori saying that I was going to be a bit late.
I had to walk quite a long way to get back home. My best friend, Tori and my younger sister, Ava were probably asleep already. I didn't even own a car, let alone afford one. I shivered a little as I walked along the long dark roads; I was stupid enough not to take a jacket with me. No one was about; it was really very lonely in this area, with its twisted alleys.
As I continued walking, rubbing my bare arms to keep them warm, I suddenly heard voices coming from one of the alleys. And they weren't just talking, they were arguing. Really loudly.
I made my way towards the source of the shouting, with the help of the light of my phone and when I did, all I could see were five tall silhouettes, with their backs facing me. I quickly slipped my phone back into my pocket.
"Where the fuck is he, then, if you didn't kill him?!" One of them spoke harshly. His voice was deep and raspy and obviously frightened the one he was speaking to. It frightened me too. Were these guys some sort of criminals?
"I-I have no idea," said a second voice, sounding fearful. "I never saw that guy, I swear!"
"You're a terrible liar," said another voice scornfully. "You know that Ben sent him to take our stuff!"
"Look here, I don't have time for this," said the first voice impatiently. "I'm going to ask you again Stan. Where. Is. Will?"
"I don't know!" the second voice said again. "I'm telling you I don't!"
"Very well, then." I saw the tall guy in the middle take out something from his back pocket and suddenly the loud sound of gunshots filled my ears and I watched the sixth person fall to the ground.
What the hell? Did they just kill that poor guy? I stifled my shocked gasp. These five guys were obviously really dangerous. "Take him out," the first voice commanded. "Dump him somewhere. The cops shouldn't find out."
"He's fucking fat, we're going to need a bulldozer to move him," another voice complained. Definitely wasn't British. But that didn't matter. I had to call the police before they killed anyone else.
But my phone rang as I took it out of my back pocket and as I pressed the End Call button frantically, the medical guide in my hand slipped and landed with a thud on the ground. And since, it was a big book, it landed heavily. The sound echoed around the alley.
Shit.
The five silhouettes turned around to the sound and at that precise moment, the moon decided to show up and light up my face.
They had seen me.
And instead of running away, I just stood there gaping, like an idiot.
"What the fuck are you idiots just staring at for, catch her!" one of them suddenly roared.
I panicked and hurriedly took to my heels, with the men hot on my trail. The moon was up and the sky had cleared, so it was almost as bright as day, though there wasn't much colour. I ran as fast as my legs would take me through the labyrinth, my arms bumping and scraping against the walls, sure to leave scratches. My feet trod on cigarettes and all kinds of trash. My lungs were burning but I didn't dare to stop for fear of those men catching me and probably killing me.
The sound of gunshots filled the air again, but this time they were aimed at me and it scared the bejesus out of me.
I was slowing down though, my breath coming out in puffs and pants. I was never the best runner, I got tired too quickly.
So I turned around a corner and hid behind the brick wall and bent down, putting my hands over my knees to catch my breath.
"Where is she?" came an angry voice; it was the one who had ordered his men to catch me, he was probably their boss. "Find that girl! Bring her to me and I'll show the little brat what happens to people when they eavesdrop on other's conversations."
His threat sent shivers down my spine, and not in a good way. I had to escape. So I took off running again in the other direction. I was going to get lost.
After what seemed like eternity of more twisting and turning around different alleys, I stopped and looked back. There was no one behind me. Thank God. Those men had probably lost me.
But when I looked behind, all I could see was a brick wall and no turns.
It was a dead end.
But I could probably call the police now. As I took out my phone, I heard a sudden gunshot and a bullet zipped past my head, making me drop my phone in fright.
I spun around to see three out of the five criminals blocking my way. The other two were probably getting rid of that dead body. The one in the middle had his gun pointed at me and he chuckled darkly.
"You're a little trapped now, aren't you, sweetheart?"
