"She'll be fine, Elena. Stop twiddling your fingers, it's getting me anxious." I looked up at my mom, scared for my little sister. She's so young and frail. She should be playing at the playground with other kids, not in here dying.

'I don't want her to die.' I signed to my mom. "She won't! Don't think like that, Elena. Think on the positive side." My mom said trying to hide her pain with a forced smile.

'What bright side? She's getting weaker everyday. The doctor said if we don't get her a new heart, she'll die! ' I signed with a tear rolling down my cheek, followed by much more.

"Don't cry, baby." My mom whispered in my ear as she hugged me. "Her room is right there, you don't want her to see you like this, do you?" My mom asked as she bent down to my eye level.

I shook my head and wiped away my tears. "That's my brave girl, come on." She said giving me one last hug before walking into Emily's room that she shared with an older man.

When we walked in, there was a blonde lady that stood at the foot of the man's bed with a chubby boy, who I assume is her son. There was another lady that had with her a bunch of children that were definitely not hers.

Ignoring them, I walked up to Emily and gave her a gentle hug, mostly because I don't want to hurt her weak body. 'Hey Emily, how are you feeling?' I asked in sign language.

"Hi Elena!" Emily said happily. This girl is one of a kind, she still managed to be cheerful even though she was in constant pain.

After hugging Emily, my mom introduced me to the family next to us. "Sheila, this is my daughter Elena. She's communicates through sign language, because she was born mute."

The lady with brown hair looked at me with pity, I hate that look. "Oh dear, you poor child. I'm Sheila and these are my foster kids." She exclaimed and gave me a hug.

I hugged her back and she went back to her spot next to the unconscious man. As I played pat a cake with Emily, one of the little girls that Sheila foster spoke up. "I learned a new dance today in class. Do you want to see it?"

As Sheila was about to tell her no, Emily butted in. "I want to see the dance, please." I turned to her and shook my head.

"Emily, it's rude to interfere with other people's business. " My mom scolded her. "No, it's alright." Sheila said quickly. "Go ahead, sweetie, show us your dance."

When the little girl started showing us her dance, she offered to show us how to do it and we said yes.

"Jump on your right foot, pause. Jump on your left foot, pause. High knees, high knees." The little girl said as she made a beat with a cup.

Sheila sounded like she wanted to please everybody, even though the blonde lady was more of a downer.  I glanced at Emily and she looked the happiest that she had ever been since she's been in the hospital.

"I'm having a great time!" Emily said with a huge smile on her face. "That's great!" Sheila told her. I sat on Emily's bed watching everyone have fun. "Do it Elena!" Emily urged me. But I shook my head and motioned for her to go on and looked down at my hands.

"What the hell are you guys doing?" A new voice said. I looked up and saw a boy that looked around my age, dodging the little kids that were jumping.

"We're waking Frank's spirit up." Sheila told him, still jumping. "Why don't you do this?" He asked before hitting Frank right in the nuts. I looked at the boy appalled that he would do something like that.

Frank woke up immediately with a loud groan. "Oh my god, dad!" The blonde lady yelled before going to Frank's side.

Sheila turned to the boy and exclaimed. "He's awake, you did it Carl!"

'So that's his name.' I thought and looked back at the scene that was unfolding right in front of my eyes. Frank looked at Emily and back to the blonde lady. "Where am I, Debbie?"He asked disoriented. The lady looked down at him, confused.

"Debbie? I'm Sammie." She told him.

"I'm going to get the doctor!" Sheila said before running out of the room.
"Where's mom going, Lip?" Frank asked looking at Carl. 'What kind of a name is Lip?' I thought to myself.

"Dude, what's wrong with you? I'm Carl. Maybe I should hit him in the nuts again." Carl said before raising his fist in the air.

A few seconds later, Sheila came back with the doctor. "You screwed his brain on backwards, he thinks we're different people." Carl told the doctor.

"Frank, do you know where you are? You're in the intensive care unit at Saint Michael's hospital. For your liver." The doctor said to Frank as he examined his eyes ignoring Carl's comment.

"Um girls, let's just leave them be." Our mom said before closing the curtains. 'I'm thirsty, can I go drink some water?' I signed to my mom. She nodded her head and moved out of the way, so I could leave.

I was unaware that Sammie, Sheila, the doctor and Carl were behind me until I heard the doctor speak up about Frank's condition.

As I walked to the water fountain, I felt someone staring at me. I turned around to make eye contact with Carl. I looked at him confused, but he just smirked. I shrugged my shoulders and turned back around, noticing that I made it to the fountain.

When I picked up my head, I took a step back, because Carl was right in front of me. He towered over my small frame."Hey baby, what's your name?" He asked with a smirk.

I shook my head as I looked at him. "Aww come on, just tell me." He said getting closer to me. I put my hand on his chest, so that he wouldn't come any closer. I thought about how I could put it in a way that he would understand when he spoke. "Why aren't you talking?"

I put my hand on my throat and shook my finger no. He looked at me still confused. I pointed at myself, shook my finger no, and did a talking hand motion.

After a few seconds, he realized what I was trying to tell him. "You can't talk?" I nodded my head with a sad smile.

"What's your name?" He questioned me. I made an E with my hands followed by a L-E-N-A. "Elena?" He asked. I nodded my head once again. "How old are you?"

I signed a 12. "You look older, well I'm 13." Carl said. "You're the girl's sister right?" I gave him a thumbs up.

"Elena, let's go visiting times are over." I looked over Carl's shoulder, and saw my mom was waving me over. I waved to Carl before going around him and saying goodbye to Emily.

I didn't know that would be my last time seeing her alive...
