((I came up with this fic by shuffling my playlist and piecing together songs to make a story so there may be references. Feel free to check out the songs before reading but it will still make sense with out knowing them. Trigger warning: Death, house fire, bullying))
The red and yellow light danced across his vision tauntingly. He watched in horror as the fire men carried two blistered and blackened corpses out of the torched house. His eyes blurred and tears forced their way out onto the shaking teens face. They were gone.
Keith clung tightly to his older brothers shirt as the two people who had raised him and adopted him were covered in white sheets that marked them dead. He was an orphan for the second time in his life. The only person left for him was his adoptive brother.
They would live alone with no more care takers until Keith graduated and could move to his own home by himself. It almost seemed like no matter what he did he would always end up like this so he decided to accept it.
He let the loneliness consume him willingly as he sat silently on his new bed in his brothers apartment. He promised himself never to let anyone in because of fear he would someday lose them and he stuck to that. That is until the first day of his senior year came around and he met some one that changed his life.A blaring siren shook him awake from his occurring dream. Groaning, he sat slowly and slammed his fist on the dismissal button. A yawn escaped his lips as begrudgingly looked at the calendar reminding his it was the first day of school. With a sigh he slid out of bed and began to get ready.
School had always been a pain but even more so now that he lived in a brand new area meaning a whole different school and a whole new swarm of students. It was a bother when people tried to talk to him or picked on him only to give up when neither really gave them a response from him.
In his last school people had ignored him, calling him a loner so he figured the same would just happen in this school. At least after this year he'd be able to finally leave this place for good.
Slipping on his shoes and running a comb through his dark hair Keith made his way down the hallway to where Shiro was finishing his breakfast up to go to work. He sat down with a sigh and helped himself to the small pile of eggs and toast on the table.
" So Keith, excited for the start of your senior year?" he asked with a half smile. Keith rolled his eyes and swallowed the large bite of food he was chewing.
" I don't get what's so special about it. It's still school nothing exciting about it except the excitement of getting to leave at the end," he muttered only to shove his mouth full of more food.
Shiro sighed with a smirk, "You never were that interested in school. I remember on your first day of kindergarten you locked yourself in the bathroom so you wouldn't have to go," he laughed, "I'm pretty sure dad had to break down the door to get you out."
Keith smiled softly only to have his eyes darken at the mention of his adoptive father. "Yeah, he used to tease me about that all the time," he mumbled into his lap, "...I'm gonna go now," He said as he slung his back pack over his shoulder and walked out the front door.
Shiro opened his mouth to say something only to be met with the slam of the door. He sighed putting a hand to his head. As expected Keith was still taking it badly. One could only hope that starting school would provide a distraction for him. He just wanted him
to be like his old self again.
The walk to his new school was just as dull and boring as it was when he had to take the bus. The only difference was the remaining summer air and heat blazing down on him the whole way that managed to make the whole situation worse. He was sweating by the time he got to the front doors.
What he opened up to was pretty much what one would expect on the first day of school. Laughter and chatter echoed through the halls as old friends reunited after the long vacation only to be scolded by teachers for being too loud. Keith made his way down the mail hallway and looked at his schedule.
His first class was English In room 142. He glanced around to find each hallway was labeled with a sign stating what range of room numbers they had. Such as "room numbers 130-150." He went down the designated hallway and into his classroom. His eyes widened to see a couple younger grade students in the class only to conclude it must be a mixed class.
The bell rang just as Keith took his seat near the front of the class (the only seat left). An older woman came in with a smile on her face to start the class.
"Welcome class, to another year." She announced a little too happily. "I'm sure you're all as pleased as I am to be here," she added sarcastically. Some kids rolled their eyes and others groaned.
The teacher sighed then continued to move on to roll call. The display of names and faces carried on through most of the period, each kid saying their name or preferred nick name and something about themselves.
When Keith's name was called he got up with a sigh giving the minimum amount of information he could. " Keith Kogane, 17." He stated before sitting right back down.
"And one thing about yourself?" The teacher reminded him.
"There's not much about me I want to tell people I don't know." He said sternly. The teacher purses her lips but seemed to accept this and continued.
Keith was barely paying attention until a certain kids name was called and he heard a chorus of muffled laughter. He looked back to find the kid, he recalled being named lance fallen over in his chair from trying to get up too quickly to introduce himself. The poor kid grew slightly red before getting back up and giving a way too enthusiastic introduction.
"My name is Lance McClain, I am 16 years old but that doesn't mean I'm not willing to date any older ladies~." he added with a wink to some of the senior girls at the back of the room. Some giggled but most of them rolled their eyes. "And one thing about me is that I love swimming which is why I'm in the swim club!"
The boy continued on and on about various things including his best friends Hunk and Pidge until the teacher reminded him he was only supposed to list one thing in which he stopped and sat down still smiling. The rest of the class was a bore as the teacher talked to the seniors about volunteer papers and credits needed to graduate.
Children raced out of the class as soon as the bell rang leaving the teacher alone yelling out not to forget to get their parents signature. Keith was the last to make his way out of the class only to come face to face with a small group of seniors surrounding someone. Keith got on his toes to see that Lance kid backed against a wall frowning for once.
"Nice fall you took there McClain, I see summer vacation couldn't fix how fucking clumsy you are." The tallest kid taunted shoving lance harder against the wall. Some of the other kids snickered only to close in harder on him muttering how useless he was and how he always managed to screw up. Lance started to push back angrily but Keith saw in his eyes something that made Keith think Lance partially believed them.
Keith began to get pissed. He finally lost it when the one kid began to raise a fist up, ready to punch. He rushed between the group of seniors telling them to fuck off. The kid who seemed to be the "leader" of the gang smirked at him evilly. Pushing his long platinum blonde hair behind his ear he closed in towards Keith this time.
"Aren't you that angsty new kid in our grade? " he asked jeeringly. Keith glared back getting ready to shield himself from whatever blow the teen could be planning.
"Yes, but I don't see what that has to do with you picking on this junior for no reason." Keith spit back. The kid looked him up and down.
"I think the real question is why do you care, you don't know him. You didn't seem to care about anything in class today so why do you just kindly leave us to our own business."
"Just because I don't know him doesn't mean I'm okay with some egomaniac bullying him with his so called friends," Keith growled. He was getting pissed off enough to beat this asshole to the floor.
"Egomaniac?" The teen's eyes grew angry. "I was going to let you go this once since you're new here and don't know who I am but since you keep persisting," he swung a punch right at Keith's face leaving him just enough time to duck before it would have hit him.
Keith lost his small amount of control and immediately attacked him. The kids around him grew wide eyed and backed up as Keith knocked their leader down with a punch to the face. The bully looked shocked before getting up quickly and wiping the blood leaking down from his nose.
"You'll regret this Kogane." The kid spat out in wrath as he walked away from the two boys, his group following close behind. That's when Keith remember what the kids name had been during role-call, Lotor.
The boy behind him finally started to move from his spot to look at Keith with a mixture of surprise and confusion. Keith turned to him with a raised eyebrow.
"I don't get it why did you stop them. You don't know me, so?" Lance questioned causing Keith to sigh.
"I don't know maybe because unlike those assholes I don't like seeing other people in pain. The thing you're supposed to say is thank you, by the way." Keith muttered before picking up his bag that had fallen during all the commotion. Lance stared at him before grinning.
"Hey, want to sit at lunch with me and my friends? They're cool so I'm sure you'll like them," Lance asked completely ignoring the others statement. "Think of it as a thanks, you get to sit with the gorgeous Lance McClain. I'm sure that will help you gain plenty of friends with you being the new kid and all. Oh and don't forget the ladies~." Lance added with a wink.
Keith stared at him blankly with his mouth hanging open. What happened that kid that had looked down right self loathing merely minutes ago. Keith shook his head. "Sorry but I usually just eat alone," He muttered about to walk away only to be pulled back by a frowning Lance.
"Come on, don't be suck a loner!" He whined, pouting. Keith stared at him only to shake his head then nod.
"Fine what ever, I guess," he grumbled. Lance's grin came back full force.
"Yes! I'll meet you by the bathrooms to bring you to my table. Don't be late!" Lance yelled happily as he turned to run to his class. It was only then did it dawn on Keith he was at least 20 Minutes late for class.
"Fuck." He muttered before beelining for his own class.
