Chapter One

"Honey you're going to love it here. I promise it's not going to be as bad as you think." Steph said.  I just rolled my eyes and stared out the window, turning my music up even louder than it already was.

Hours past by with no one talking. Mom knew this was tough for me. Ever since the accident I haven't been the same, nor has she. We've never brought it up since it happened, and I want to keep it that way. For now.

It's been a few hours and this car ride was suffocating. My mind is running crazy. I decide to talk to my mom.

I turn around and face my mother as she's driving into a gas station.

"Hey, Steph. What are we doing here at the gas station? The tank is full." I asked my mother. She gave me a smile and hopped out of the car. Leaving me there sitting confused. Honestly she doesn't explain things a whole lot.

Jumping out of the car I run up to her. "Why are we here? You just left me in the car in an unknown place."

"We're getting food. I'd thought you would be hungry. I heard your stomach growling like a lion in a zoo." She laughed and all I could do was give her a weird look of confusion. Rolling my eyes we walked inside and what I saw was a little diner.

It was homey and cozy. It just gave me this warm feeling. A feeling of being wanted. We took a seat inside a booth and waited for a waitress.

It took a good 15 minutes before a waitress came along.

"I'm so sorry for the wait I just had to fire the waitress. She's a little crazy if you know what I mean." I gave the lady a warming smile and giggled just slightly. "So what can I get you ladies here?"

"I'll have a Dr. Pepper with a steak, medium rare, and some mash potatoes on the side, please. Jess what would you like?"

My mom's question popped me out of my thoughts. "Oh, umm. I'll have a hamburger, with everything on it, with some french fries. Oh and do you have any milkshakes?" I looked at her with an questioning look waiting for her to finish writing down our order before she answered.

"Yes we do. We have chocolate, strawberry, caramel, and umm.. Oh yea Oreo! Which would you like?" She questioned me, but all I could do was look at her with joy.

"OREO!! Please and thank you." I was super excited.

"Okay coming right up! I'll be back with your order in a few minutes." She says while walking away to take our order to the back. As she did so I looked around the diner some more noticing the detail and taking it all in.

It was old fashioned and western styled. Like the wild west. It made me think of those bars in the old western movies. I smiled as the thought brought up a memory. I stuck the memory far back in my head.

The waitress came back with our order and we pigged in. Their milkshakes were absolutely the best things ever! I looked at my mom and swallowed before asking, "Steph how far are we away from our new home? Because I swear if I have to drive across three states to get to here I will." I said with the most serious look I could muster up.

"Actually we live about four miles away from here. The school you'll be attending at is about two and half miles away from here."

"Great cause I'm coming here for lunch everyday!"

"Well you could be here even more. Maybe they're looking for a replacement for the waitress they just fired." I looked at her and just when I was about to say something the waitress came back over to check on us.

"Hi, are y'all doing alright? Could I get you anything else?" She was absolutely one of the sweetest people.

I gave her and smile and asked," Yes actually umm are y'all hiring? Cause if so you don't have to look any further."

"Yes we are and young lady, you're hired!" She squealed.

Jumping out of my seat I gave her a hug and said thanks. After a while we finished up and she told me that I'll be starting tomorrow after school.

Yay me. I thought to myself as I rolled my eyes.  This job might be the only good thing about moving to Texas.

When we finally arrived at our new "home" I couldn't take my eyes off of it. It was huge! I mean HUGE!

I finally got myself together and got out of the car.

"Steph are we at the right place? Cause I don't think we are." I stood there waiting for her to answer, and when she did I couldn't believe what came out of her mouth.

"Yes, Jess this is our new home. It's huge compared to our old one, but like I said we have a lot of money with my new job. I will be away and off on business a lot. Just remember to feed the horses." She finished off her sentence.

"HORESES!!!" I screamed running back to the backyard. There they were in the stalls. I couldn't help but smile. I looked at the four of them. They were beautiful.

"That one over there at the far end is yours." I turned and walked down to the far end and there he was. A black horse dark as night with blue eyes was standing there looking at me.

I opened the stall and as soon as I did the horse walked up to me and nudge me with his head. Right then and there I knew what his name would be, "Midnight."
