Chapter 2: Miyuki
Part 2 (1 of 1)After everything he said, Miyuki shouldn’t be transferring to this school.
Izumiko thought restlessly on her way to school that Monday. But Miyuki Sagara did not appear at Awatani Middle School that day.
All of her classmates went on with their day as usual. There wasn’t even a shadow of a rumor about a transfer student. It felt like a letdown to Izumiko. But there was no reason for her to be slipping that far away from common sense and reality. It seemed like there had been some sort of mistake with what Sagara had said on the phone.
It was the day of the one on one consultations. However, seeing as classes were taking place at the same time as the meetings, the students did not get a chance to see their parents when they came to the school.
As Sagara had promised, he attended Izumiko’s conference as a representative for her parents. But with the meeting in the middle of classes, he came and went without seeing her. By the time Izumiko found out Sagara had come, he had already left in his car. And the only reason she was aware of his departure at all was because of the girls watching from the windows and making a fuss over him. She heard from his admirers that he had come looking classy in a sports jacket.
If he didn’t have anything to say to me today, I guess the whole thing about Miyuki transferring here really won’t happen.
She breathed a sigh of relief. The drama surrounding what she wanted to do with the next four years of her life was finally coming to a close. Sagara had probably been reluctant to go against Daisei’s plans, but he had respected Izumiko’s wishes. She would have to thank him the next time he came to the shrine.
Izumiko thought that Sagara would be there when she arrived home that day. He wasn’t. However, Sawa had gotten a call saying he would be there soon.
The sky was getting dark when Sagara finally appeared, dressed in a suit. Miyuki was behind him. Shocked, Izumiko forgot everything she had planned to say to Sagara. Whatever it had been, there was no point in saying it now. Miyuki looked completely different with a bandage wrapped around his right arm and another on his cheek.
Sawa, standing next to Izumiko, was shocked as well.
“What happened, Miyuki? What are those injuries?”
Amazingly, both father and son smiled together this time. Miyuki’s face was pale.
“It wasn’t a big accident, but a car hit me while I was riding my bike.”
“A traffic accident? It really wasn’t serious?”
Sagara caught Sawa’s worried gaze and said smoothly, “We just wanted to let you know what happened. We’re still continuing Miyuki’s plans to transfer here. He’s just a little knocked around at the moment. The doctor said it could be up to two weeks before he can use his right arm again. There’s no way he can live alone at the moment. Due to this, could we trouble you to have Miyuki stay here at the shrine and commute to Awatani Middle School with Izumiko each day?”
The situation brought Takeomi out of the shrine office and they all settled into the living room to discuss what would happen. Takeomi, who hadn’t known about Miyuki’s plans to transfer to Awatani, was just as surprised as Izumiko had been.
He looked at Miyuki, not at Sagara.
“Is it really alright to leave a preparatory school like Keibun Academy and transfer to a school out here in the middle of nowhere? It’s not that I don’t appreciate what Sagara’s doing, but there’s no reason for a smart student like you to throw away all your work and move.”
