Red Data Girl: The First Makeup
By Noriko Ogiwara
A TranslationNotes on this week’s piece.
There’s a number of new names in this chapter. One of them is Mikoto Kanzaki. Usually, characters’ names are presented without a suffix (san, kun, etc–the equivalent of Ms. or Mr. in English) in the narration. However each time Mikoto Kanzaki’s name appeared, it was presented as her last name connected with the suffix ‘女史(joshi)’. I had never seen this suffix before so I looked it up. Unsurprisingly, it seems to be a respectful term like Ms. or Miss in English. I chose to translate it to Miss.
Another newish name that shows up in this piece is Jean Honoka Kisaragi. Jean is written in katakana, making it a foreign name.
At one point in this piece, the conversation changes very suddenly from dance to shikigami. This is probably my fault. Mayura’s dialogue was hard to understand. Sorry! ^^;-----------------------------------------

“I won’t accept that!”
When Mayura took that forceful tone of voice, whoever she was talking to had to give in, even if it was against their better judgment. Unfortunately this one time, Izumiko definitely couldn’t give into what Mayura wanted to hear. It wasn’t that easy.
“Really. There’s no way I could join the student government executive group. I can’t even touch a computer so there’d be no point in me joining. There’s really no reason to help me get in.”
“When you say it like that, it sounds like what Manatsu told me. But even though he said all those things, he’s still planning to join now, just like I asked him to. Izumiko, you don’t have to be so ashamed of your issues with computers.”
“I can’t do it! Sagara can’t imagine me joining the student government at all either.”
Mayura looked at her, her mind clearly already made up.
“You’re a girl. You shouldn’t do something just because of what Sagara thinks. It’s not about his opinion. It’s about what you want to do. Show him what you’re capable of. Deep down, you really want to join, right? It’s written all over your face.”
“Ah. No… That’s not what I want at all…”
“I want you to join. I want Manatsu to join too. I think I’m perfectly justified in saying that I won’t join unless you two join with me.”
“I’m still not going to join, even if you say things like that.”
Mayura suddenly changed her plan of attack.
“Of course if Takayanagi wins the election, this year’s student government will be completely different. I think that much is safe to say. As long as last year’s government is still in power, it won’t hurt to at least go in and show our faces.”
“I’m not good at introducing myself.”
“I was mostly talking about me. But everyone there are high level students. I’d be nervous if I went alone.”
Izumiko frowned at Mayura. It was easy to see through her words.
“That’s a complete lie.”
“No it isn’t. Seeing as Manatsu’s already escaped, I won’t go up to the second floor unless you come with me. And if I don’t come today after saying I’d introduce Sagara, it’ll make Sagara look bad. Do you want to do that?”
“You’re horrible for saying that.”
“You’re so cute when you’re upset. I haven’t seen you like this before. It’s adorable.”
