Notes on this week’s translation:

There’s one or two terms I’m leaving unexplained in this week’s piece. I’ll talk about them next week when I have a few more to add. :)

Chapter 2: Ichijo
Part 2 (2 of 2)

Standing behind the stairs in the axillary building, Izumiko hurriedly explained what had happened after class.

She was still flustered which made it difficult for her to get to the point of the story. It felt like she was making up delusions as she spoke even though she had experience it all only minutes before. But they only felt like memories now. There was no more concrete feeling behind what she was saying.

Still, Miyuki did not try to interrupt her, nor did he laugh. When she was finished with her tale, he thought for a minute.

“The foreign exchange students, they’ve come from all over the place though.”

“I’m not afraid of all of them. And I know it might just be because I’m not used to foreigners. Really, I don’t get that feeling from them all though.”

“You’re scared of Japanese people too. It’s just generally boys.”

When he put it so simply, there was no way for her to argue. Not that she could ever deny it. However, Miyuki didn’t understand the different in the level and type of fear she felt when it came to the exchange students.

“You really have no idea why he asked you to meet him during lunch? Did he act or sound insistent?” Miyuki asked suddenly

“What do you mean by insistent?” Izumiko asked sounding hopeless.

Miyuki explained.

“You looked right at him earlier, right? What was he like? Tell me. Try explaining exactly what you saw.”

Miyuki turned and began to walk down the hall. Izumiko chased after him.

“Don’t you believe what I just told you?” she asked reproachfully. “Are you trying to say I misunderstood him?”

“That’s not what I mean,” Miyuki replied. His response took a strange turn. “It would be easy to call you crazy, but I saw Wamiya last year too. He came to this world—I mean, I saw him with my own eyes. If you’ve attracted strange things again, I’m not going to tell you you’re wrong right away.”

…At least it seems like he thought about it. Izumiko thought quickly.

It only took her a moment to say what she had to, but that was because of Miyuki. She knew that he was angry with her for not being able to describe what she had seen.

Seeing as she did not have the courage to step back into Class C, Izumiko informed Miyuki of where Ricardo’s desk was and what he looked like from the shadow of the classroom door. Then, Miyuki walked inside, his head held high.

Spotting Manatsu, he called out to him. After a minute or two, he came back. No matter who had seen it, Miyuki’s behavior would have appeared normal. He had carefully used his poker face the entire time.

“Could you see his face?” Izumiko asked quietly.

Miyuki nodded.

“I saw it. I wouldn’t say it looked strange either. I wonder if he might have Japanese relatives. His skin tone’s not that dark. He looks like the sort of student who’s not out to make any trouble.”
