A Translation

Notes on this week’s translation:

Just a quick reminder if anyone needs it-
Honoka = Student government vice president
Hodaka = Student government shadow president (The anime translated this to secret president, but the direct Japanese translation is shadow president. It sounds cooler, so I kept it that way.)

Chapter 4: Hodaka
Part 3 (2 of 3)

“Huh? Why didn’t Izumiko come today?” Mayura asked, looking up from her work and around the room. She was proofreading the student government newsletter.

“It’s weird, isn’t it? She didn’t say that she had anything to do. I wonder where she went. Do you know?”

“No idea.”

Miyuki did not look up as he answered. He was also in the middle of proofreading the newsletter.

“I wanted Izumiko to help with this. I’m going to check her classroom.”

Miyuki finally looked up as Mayura rose from her chair.

“You can’t run away like this, Mayura.”

“What are you talking about? Finish your own work and stop worrying about mine.”

She stomped out of the room. Miyuki let out a sigh. As he was about to go back to work, Mikoto Kanzaki caught his eye. She didn’t spend as much time in the government room as she had before the administration had changed but she appeared on occasion when Honoka couldn’t come.

“What?” Mizuki prompted.

“Izumiko Suzuhara is the girl who comes with you to student government, isn’t she?” Mikoto asked. “What is she like?”

“She doesn’t come with me. She comes with Mayura.”

Mikoto took no notice of Miyuki’s annoyed tone.

“Weren’t you with Mayura when she came to introduce herself to us?” She adjusted her glasses. “You’re all good friends, aren’t you? Mayura’s brother who hangs out at the stables is part of your group too.”

“We’re not good friends, actually. The other three spend a lot of time together, but not me.”

After making sure Mikoto was aware of her mistake, Miyuki continued.

“It’s fine if you don’t include Izumiko in today’s student government work. She’s only been coming because Mayura wants her to. She can’t even do her portion of the work anyway.”

“I could see that from the few times I’ve been here with her.”

“It’s exactly what you’ve seen then.”

Miyuki had intended to end the conversation there, but Mikoto had more to say.

“You know, out of all the people who joined the student government this year, you’re the one I’m the happiest with. I’m really grateful for all Mayura’s done too, but sometimes I wonder what her intentions really are.”

Miyuki glanced at the former student government president and replied calmly,

“I know what they are. She told me right from the start.”

“But I don’t know what they are.”

Mikoto laced her fingers together and sighed.

“Mayura is so good at gaining people’s affections that I can’t even dislike her. It doesn’t matter that she’s a spoiled rich girl who doesn’t follow group dynamics. And then there’s Izumiko who sticks to her like a shadow. Why do you think Mayura lets her do that?”
