Leyla's POV
"Leyla, wake up!" A perky voice pierced through my sleep. I rolled over and groaned in a very un-ladylike way.
"Come on, I made breakfast," the voice coaxed. On cue, the delicious aroma of pancakes, bacon, and all my other favorite breakfast foods hit me. Holy moly.
I sat up and stretched. "There we go! Now get your lazy butt downstairs because you're late, and I don't want you to waste the food I just made." I looked up to see Xiana, my older sister, dressed and ready for school. I guess I should do the same. I dragged myself out of bed and into the bathroom to get ready.
After a quick shower, I wrapped a towel around myself and walked back to my room. Wait, what day is it?
"Xiana, what day is it?" I yelled.
"Monday!" she answered.
Shit. First day, and I'm already late!
I threw on my clothes, grabbed my breakfast and lunch, and sprinted down the stairs. "I'm gonna eat on the way! Thanks, Xiana!" I yelled as I ran out the door. My sister, whom I sometimes call XJ when I'm in the mood, just laughed.
As I jogged through the streets of Sydney, I took a bite of my bacon and listened to the birds chirping. Once the bacon was gone, I pulled out my headphones and put on "La La" by The Cab. Before the song even started, someone snatched them from my head.
"I knew you'd be late too!" she chimed. I turned to see Jaja, my best friend, wearing her signature hoodie, jean shorts, tube socks, and Keds.
I smirked. "Hey there, JJ. Late too, aye?" She nodded, walking beside me.
She sighed, and I raised an eyebrow. "Nothing," she said. "Just getting ready for Mrs. Winters to scold us in front of the whole class." I chuckled. Mrs. Winters was our advisory teacher, and let's just say she wasn't a fan of kids our age.
As we walked, Jaja went on and on about her new boyfriend, making me gag. Just then, a car pulled up next to us.
"Hey, ugly ducklings, need a ride?"
We looked at the person in the driver's seat. "Hey Faith and Jovi, nice entrance! And yeah, we need one. Thanks, by the way!" Jaja hurried to the left side while I ran to the right. I gave them a fist bump, and we were off.
"Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis came on, and I started rapping along. The girls glanced at me with weirded-out looks.
"What?" I asked, feeling a bit stupid.
They giggled. Jovi turned to me from her seat. "Seriously, you look like a boy sometimes. I promise you that." Jaja and Faith nodded in agreement, and I just rolled my eyes.
"Well for one, I don't like wearing makeup or perky dresses, and two, I'm fine with who I am, thank you very much," I quipped. They just laughed at me.
"Alright, girls, we're here and late," Faith called out.
I fixed my beanie, opened the car door, and got out. Boys started whistling at my best friends, and I rolled my eyes. Are you kidding me? They're not dogs, idiots.
"There's my partner!" a hand was placed on my shoulder. I looked up to see Calum.
"Hey Cal, what are you doing here?" I asked.
He shrugged. "I was bored in class, so I snuck out and waited for you."
"Awe, is Calum Hood missing me already?" I said in a baby voice, pinching his cheek. He swatted my hand away, and I stuck my tongue out at him. "Anyways, I think you need to get to class." He pointed ahead. I could see my friends waiting, surrounded by a group of boys. I nodded and fist-bumped Calum as a goodbye.
