Leyla's POV

Let me tell you one thing: Trying to convince my friends to go to church is a major pain. I have to beg them, bribe them, and then convince them all over again. Yes, my sister and I are Christians, and they just can't wrap their heads around it.

"Alright, after church, we'll go to an amusement park. How about that?" I suggested, my patience wearing thin. It's bad to hang out right after church, my subconscious scolded, but I ignored it. If I didn't bribe them, I'd never get these guys to come with me.

Faith sighed. "I second that."

The others eventually agreed. Great. Now we just had to wait for Ashton.

"What are we even going to do there? Just sit around and wait for it to finish?" Michael whined.

I glared at him. "If you don't want to be bored, then help me. Faith, Jaja, and Jovi can sing with the choir. I'll tell you the details later."

He rolled his eyes and slumped deeper into the couch. We had to be there by 9:00 a.m. sharp, and I hated being late for this. I'm okay with being late for school, but church is different.

At 8:30 a.m., we heard a loud honk from outside. Finally. I pulled on my cream cardigan and brushed a few breadcrumbs off my white, calf-length skirt. A skirt. I'm not really a "girly" girl, and skirts aren't my thing, but I still had my sense of style. Xiana had made us all egg sandwiches on whole-wheat bread.

We all charged out the door, fighting for the shotgun seat. Since Xiana and Ashton were practically a thing, she got the front seat.

"Hello!" Erika chirped from the passenger seat. I jumped. How could anyone be so energetic at this hour?

Xiana turned her head and smiled. "Hey, Erika. Didn't see you there."

I rolled my eyes. Of course, you didn't. You're right in front of us. The van was huge, with four seats in the middle and one in the back, perfect for a big group like us.

"Ashton, you got a USB connector?" I asked.

"Yeah, why?"

"I'm putting on some tunes."

Jaja groaned. "Oh no, not one of your rocking beats again."

Ashton handed me the cord, and I plugged my phone into the car's player. I hit play on "Intoxicated" by The Cab.

"Calm your tits, woman, you're gonna love this one."

On the ride, they actually did. By the time we pulled up to the church, I felt like I'd scored a small victory. The van came to a halt, and all conversation died down.

"So, how many hours do I have to suffer?" Michael asked me.

"About half a day."

"I'd rather kill myself," he mumbled.

"I will pray for you."

"Are you Mandy Moore from A Walk to Remember?" he retorted.

"Don't underestimate that movie," I said, getting out of the car. "It's lovely."

The others followed me into the church. I spotted my friend Jasmine, who's half Italian, half Filipina, and lives in Melbourne. She's the same age as me but goes to a different school. She has more class and manners than the kids I know there.

"Leyla, how are you? It's so nice to see you again," she said with a smile, pulling me into a hug.

"I'm good. You?" I said, pulling away. "Feels like it's been years."

Her face hardened, and her lips pursed. "Xiana hasn't told you yet?"

"Told me what?"

"Leyla, you were—"

"Hey, Jasmine, let me introduce you to Ashton!" Xiana said, walking up and interrupting with a nervous laugh. I could tell she was trying to cover something up. She's my sister, after all. A wave of dread washed over me. Xiana was keeping a secret from me.

And because curiosity kills the cat, I was going to find out what it was.
