Roderich couldn't have had a better first day. After first period, word of his name got around fast. Though he did get questions about his dad, which weren't that bad, he also had a bunch of long, deep conversations with some real music nerds. He learned about a lot of cool new bands, songwriters, producers. He also got to tell them about some of his favorite artists and musicians, which some of them had never heard of but were eager to listen. He had even met this one kid, Nigel, who wanted to start a band with him. He was good too. He had showed Roderich some videos of him on the drums, and he even had a Youtube account where he posted piano covers to songs.
Besides all of the musical discussions, there was also all of the girls to love. For the past year and a half, he'd been in an all boys' school and had almost forgotten what great company girls were. Not even music talk could beat flirting with the cutest girls he could find in the class and making them blush and giggle.
By lunch, he had a girl on either side of him— one, a tall outspoken brunette with wavy long hair and a brown sugar skin tone named Arleta, and the other with short black hair put up into pigtails and long bangs over her forehead who said her name was Jie. They both walked along side him to the cafeteria and through the lunch line. As he waited for the line to move, the girls chatted with each other and asked him questions on occasion. He spent most of the time comparing the small and dull gray lunchroom to the one at his old school. When his eyes found the blonde, he sat at one of the smaller round tables with one other person.
"Hey, does Lutz always just sit with that one kid he's with over there?" Roderich asked the girls with him as he nodded his head off in the direction of his brother.
They both looked over then back to him.
"You don't know Luciano?" Jie asked. "Isn't he your cousin too?"
"Cousin?"
"Oh," Arleta swatted her hand down across Roderich to get Jie's attention, "Luci must be Lutz's cousin on his mom's side."
Jie nodded. "Ah, right. Right."
"But yeah," Arleta went on, "Luci and Kuro are the only two people Lutz really talks to. You remember Kuro? He's in our class. Fourth period. He sits up front."
Roderich snapped as an image of the boy Arleta was talking about came to mind. "Oh! You mean that emo Asian dude off in the corner, right?"
Jie covered her mouth as her eyes grew, and she started to laugh. She hit his arm as she said, "You better not let him hear you say that."
Arleta smiled and sat her hand on Roderich's shoulder. "You want to help us mess with Lutz?"
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"I just want to tease him a little," she said. "I mean, he never even told us that he had a superstar dad and brother. You're gonna come with me, right?" She wrapped an arm around his and leaned against him. "Please?"
Roderich turned his head away from the girl and smiled to himself. "Eh. Nah."
Arleta giggled and pushed him. "Come on!" She leaned forward. "Jie Jie! Help me out."
Jie just shook her head but kept an interested and amused expression.
"Well, if Jie Jie doesn't like it," Roderich said, "I don't think I want to. I can't risk having her mad at me for it."
"What if I'm mad at you?" Arleta pouted.
Roderich covered his heart with one of his hands as he lowered his head and looked at the girl with big puppy dog eyes. "Don't even play like that. Seriously."
She laughed and pushed him again. "Shut up! You're so dramatic."
Arleta reached behind Roderich to tap Jie's back. "Come on. He's not going to unless you say so, obviously."
