Dakota
Three days had passed since Shayne, and I shared our first kiss. Every day since then we have spent time together. Shayne wasn't at work right now, he said he had to pick up his family from the airport, but he would see me later today. I was walking down the hall on the fifth floor with Bethany tailing me, constantly begging me to go to the family event later tonight.
"I'm just asking if you could stop by for just a minute. It will be--"
"BETHANY STOP!" I screamed, earning the attention of everyone on the fifth floor. I clenched my fist tighter and closed my eyes and took slow, deep breaths. I opened my eyes and Bethany had taken two steps away from me.
"I said no. I meant no. So please stop asking me." I breathed and walked away from her. I got on the elevator and made my way up to my office. When the door opened, I stepped off the elevator and looked to my right. I noticed that Shayne's office door was open. I peeked inside and no one was at the desk. I glanced at my phone to check the time and it was ten minutes until noon.
I walked towards my door and pushed it open just as Shayne's arm wrapped around my waist and pulled me towards him. My fist relaxed just as his lips found mine and the smell of AXE cologne assaulted my nose. I immediately relaxed, I pulled away and stared up at him.
"You know how close you were to getting punched in the face." I laughed.
"I'm sorry I scared you." Shayne smirked. I shook my head and walked towards my desk and plopped down in my chair with a groan. I ran my hands through my hair in frustration. Shayne sat in one of the chairs in front of me and watched me.
"What's the matter?" He asked. I sighed and glanced at him sitting up straighter in my chair.
"Bethany just will not stop. She hasn't stopped since our trip to the spa. I mean why does she want me to come to this family thing so badly when I told her no?" I wondered out loud.
"Bethany can be a little persistent sometimes. I'll talk to her okay." Shayne said. I nodded and he kissed me one last time before walking out of my office. I stare out the window at the beautiful city of Colorado. The beautiful clear sky up above and the sun shining brightly. I stood from my seat and thought about tonight. Why should I miss out on this event simply because I didn't want to be reminded of what I never had. But I do have a family, a new family. I have Alice, Jace, Shayne, Bethany and even Dan.
"Stopping by for a minute wouldn't hurt me, would it?" I asked myself. I made up my mind I would go but only for an hour. I grabbed my phone off my desk and texted Bethany the news. I sat in my chair and got started on my work. I had gotten a new case three days ago defending an eighteen-year-old accused of armed robbery. I'm supposed to meet with him tomorrow to discuss what happened.
Five minutes into my case, I heard Bethany before I saw her. Bethany ran into my office with Shayne following close behind her. Bethany tackled me in a hug literally sitting in my lap hugging the life out of me. "Oh, thank you thank you thank you!" Bethany squealed. I patted her back and she let me go.
"Okay, so it's semi formal and it starts at seven thirty. Oh, I can't wait to show you your surprise." Bethany cheered before running out of my office laughing like a ten-year-old. Shayne laughed and smiled at me before walking out of my office.
Five thirty came quickly. I walked into my house and upstairs to my room. Alice and Jace were cuddled up on the couch, the both of them asleep and the tv still on. I walked towards the table and shut the tv off using the remote. Walking up to my bedroom, I began getting ready for the family benefit. Alice appeared beside me a few seconds later, her eyes still closed.
