“So then what happened?” My girl bestfriend Cynn asked. It was Saturday morning and we were talking on the phone.
“We ate our sundaes and he drove me home.”
“Did he kiss you?” she asked curiously with a giggle.
“Except for that non-kiss on the movie? No.”
“Oh,” Cynn sounded disappointed.
“I think he wanted to when he walked me to the door, but I didn’t gave him the chance.
“And why is that?” Cynn was intrigued.
“Part of my plan is to play hard to get. Besides, I was afraid that if we started kissing, I’d lose my self-control, and the sophisticated Dana would disappear in a puff of smoke.”
“So when are you seeing him again?”
I smiled by myself. “Well, he asked me out for tonight, but I told him I wanted to spend the night with my dad.” I laughed. “I think that shocked him. I don’t think Jake was ever turned down by a girl before.”
“Wow.”
The phone clicked, my call waiting. It was Jake. I said a quick goodbye to Cynn.
“Hey, Dana.” Jake’s voice sound sexier than usual. “I know you’re having dinner with your father tonight, but I can’t get you out of my mind. I was hoping we could hang out after your dinner. It doesn’t matter how late, I’ll wait for you.”
“Aww, Jake, I don’t know what time we’ll get back from the restaurant…” Playing hard to get is getting harder and harder.
“It doesn’t matter. I’ll be waiting by the pool.”
It was late when we got home and Dad went straight to bed. I went into my room as if I’m going to bed and waited for him to turn off his light. Then, I quickly put on fresh lipstick and lip gloss, fluffed my hair and hurried to Jake’s.
I found Jake waiting in a lounging chair by the pool at the Janssen’s. The only light came from the moon and the candles he placed on the small table.
He smiled when he saw me. “I’m glad you came.” He said taking my hand. Soft music drifted out from his iPod. “I love this song. Would you like to dance?”
But hold your breath
Because tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you over again
Don’t make me change my mind
Or I won’t live another day
I swear it’s true
Because a girl like you is impossible to find
You’re impossible to find
Jake pulled me into his arms and we started to dance slowly.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" Jake murmured in my ear.
Jake was saying exactly what I wanted him to say. What I had dreamed for so long. And I was finally in his arms, dancing under the moonlight.
I look up into Jake's blue eyes and felt my knees go weak. He tilted my head and leaned down. I smelled his minty breath just before his lips touched mine.
But suddenly the pool area was bathed in bright light.
"Whooops! Sorry!" It was Zach. "I heard voices out here,it could be burglars so I decided to check it out, sorry." Jake gave him a glare and he just stood there far from being apologetic.
"Would you mind?" Jake widened his eyes at his brother.
But Zach just crossed his arms, not budging one bit. Jack wrapped his arms around me possessively. But somehow the bright lights and Zach's sudden appearance had caused a sudden change in my mood. A moment ago Jake was going to kiss me, and I have waited for eternity for that kiss. I could tell Jake was ready to pick up where we left off, but seeing Zach had caused my mood to shift.
I didn't want him witnessing this. I don't know why, I just don't.
"I- I have to go," I stammered, shrugging out of Jake's embrace. Then I turned and ran home.
When I got home, I got upstairs directly to my bedroom. I didn’t turn on the light and looked out the window. The window of my room is directly facing the Janssen’s pool. I saw Jake and Zach talking, but I couldn’t hear what they were saying. Then Jake stormed inside the house, he looked upset. Zach was left outside.
I changed into my pajamas and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth.
Zach was still slumped in the chair by the pool when I went to bed. He looked upset too. I wonder what was bothering him.
