The first day of school was chaos. Everyone was hugging and kissing as if they hadn’t seen each other in years.
Mrs. Taylor made several announcements about new school rules: no torn jeans, no tank tops and no miniskirts. A few boys in the back row groaned. Mrs. Taylor just laughed. She was a pretty cool teacher.
“I have one more announcement.” She continued. “The varsity football team is sponsoring a dance this coming Saturday Night.”
Cynn and I looked at each other and grinned. I wondered if Jake would ask me to the dance. Of course he will, I assured myself.

Facebook notification. Jake messaged me. I read it excitedly.
‘See you tonight? 7:30? I’ll be waiting by the pool…’
How romantic.
Maybe we could pick up where we had left off before Zach came.
After dinner I went upstairs and changed into shorts, a white fitted short sleeved shirt and it tucked into my shorts and left a few buttons opened. I slipped on my white and wooden wedges and rushed outside to meet Jake.
I was relieved to see that Zach’s pick up wasn’t in its usual spot when I get to the Janssen’s. I hoped that meant that Zach was out. Maybe Jake had made it clear that Zach should stay out of the pool area. That was fine with me, wasn’t it? Just me, Jake and the moonlight.
Jake was waiting for me, as he’d said he would be. When he smiled at me, my heart skipped a beat.
“I was afraid you wouldn’t come.” He said getting up.”I was afraid I’m going to have a lonely night without you.”
So breathe in so deep
Breathe me in, I’m yours to keep
And hold on to your words cause talk is cheap
And remember me tonight when you’re asleep
Because tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you over again
Jake took me in his arms. Then I felt the gentle touch of his lips. I waited for the world to stop rotating on its axis. Disappointingly, it was not the kiss I had dreamed on so many times.
Kissing Jake in real life wasn’t at all like I had imagined it would be. I’d thought I would melt into his arms, that time would stand still. But no, no fireworks, only a warm sensation from my toes to the top of my head.
Of course, he was my first kiss. Maybe this was just what kissing was like, wasn’t it?
