"OK Kate....one more push and that should do it," smiled Dr. Sharmesh, looking up and giving a reassuring smile. Her Hindu-accented English was authoritarian and calming all at once. She had delivered Kate's two older children, Mia and Joe, as well. Kate trusted her fully and loved her bedside manner.
Kate nodded, took a deep breath and turned to Leo, who was holding her hand tightly and beaming at her beside the delivery room bed. She kissed his hand and gently asked, "Are you ready?" Kate could tell he was nervous. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead and she could feel his palms were damp. She was about to give birth to their baby, a love child not just nine months, but 16 years in the making. Leo felt a mix of excitement, nervousness and amazement as the sound of he and Kate's baby boy's heart translated into beeps on the fetal heart monitor on the other side of the bed. Then it almost seemed as if he and Kate flashed back to that magical night nine months before....
