Chapter One
{Terra's POV}
"Are you as excited as I am?" Mei squeals through the phone. I sigh. Did my best friend manage to wet herself again, squealing like that? I couldn't answer right away. School was out, and we were planning to meet at the mall to buy some dresses for a party this Friday. That was, if I could sneak out for the party. But getting out of the house wasn't the problem. I'd have to wait through an entire week of school for it. Can I just say, bummer!
"Maybe a little less, since we got Hell for us this whole week." Ugh. I braked for the oncoming stoplight, making my route to the bank. I still had to have some money left, right? I did buy a ton of booze illegally for the last party at my house. I had to have some. I blew a strand of my long, pink hair out of my face. Don't ask. But let me give you this information: If you're super wasted at a party where there are zoo animals shitting all over the floor, don't succumb to peer pressure and dye your hair hot pink. Just saying.
"Oh yeah! We have testing...boooring. Can we talk about something else other than our imminent failure?" I gasped at the phone currently on speaker in my car, pushing on the gas as the light turned green.
"Mei!" I yelled. "Two intelligent words have been spoken! That means two dollars in the intelligence jar." Mei groaned. We'd set up an "intelligence jar" so that when we said big words like "imminent" and "failure", we'd have to put a dollar in for each word. And so that we didn't look like Smart Alecs, saying words like that. That could seriously ruin our rep. "You should be ashamed." I chided, playfully.
"I am." Mei faked sobs into her phone. "Oh Lord who art thou in forever, forgive my heinous crimes against the humanity of teenagers." She was pushing her luck.
"All right, Mei. I'm giving you a warning. You just used tons of The Words. I doubt you have enough money to pay for the laws you just broke." I could hear giggling from her end of the line.
"Would you just hurry up and get here? It's weird sitting here alone on the fountain, just talking into my phone. People might think I'm pedo." I laughed at the joke. "The others haven't gotten here either. I'm so worried." Mei put on an act of being choked up with her voice.
"Shut up. I'll be there soon. Don't do what I wouldn't."
"There's nothing you wouldn't do, Terra." I made a face, turning into the parking lot of the bank.
"Yeah, you're probably right." I hung up and the line went dead. Pulling into a parking space, I turned the key in the ignition, and the car stopped vibrating. Grabbing my phone from the "Hands Free" holder, I stepped out of the car. I pulled my coat around me as a gust of wind pushed my way. Jeez, it's chilly. What did I expect? It is almost Thanksgiving.
Thinking about Thanksgiving, and what I was going to give thanks to, there wasn't much that didn't involve technology that I was Thankful for. Glad that Friday's party would wrap up the week so that Thanksgiving Break could roll around, I pushed around the revolving doors, making my way into the warm and cozy bank.
Goddamn lines! I'm running the clock here!
There wasn't much that didn't piss me off. I was a hormonal teenager, in case you didn't notice, by the way.
I stood behind a line, waiting to talk to the hostess at the counter so I could access my funds. Eugh, that sounded smart. I need to dumb myself down some more. Crossing my fingers that I had enough to buy all I'd need for that night, I moved forward as the line wavered. Lines!
"What is taking so long?" I hissed. The man in front of me turned at my irritable voice, and my heart jolted. That was weird. Never felt that feeling before.
I figured out in a second that it wasn't a man, but a boy. A boy that went to my school. And if you're popular like I am, you know everyone's name. But I didn't know his, even though I'd seen his face plenty of times. It was just one you could stare at for a while. Strong jaw, high cheekbones, exceptable muscle tone, mint green eyes, and cropped, windswept brown hair.
The look he gave me said he didn't know who I was either.
"Old lady at the cash register." His voice was deep and silky. "She's having trouble figuring out the person's total balance now." A small smile played at his lips. I didn't even have a clue what his rep was, either. This guy is like a stale chocolate bar. Not as good as a fresh one, but taste well just the same. I sighed and did an eye roll in my head as I just compared him to the rest of the hotter student body. With chocolate bars.
"Well, if she's having arthritic pain in her rump, tell her I can't do anything for her." The boy coughed into his fist, trying to hide the grin snaking its way onto his lips. Then I heard the most disturbing noise. I thought it was disturbing because my little brother's video games make the same exact noise. It was a gunshot.
Oh my gluteus maximus. What the actual fudge...
Screams made their way to my ears, and it was not at all a pleasant noise.
"Get down!" The boy pulled me down to the floor by my waist. I feared for my life as men in dark masks shot their guns some more. I leaned into the boy, hoping that he would somehow protect me.
"Down on the ground! All of you! Now!" The deep, disgusting voice of the banks perpetrators ran out among the screams and cries. I whimpered, willing myself not to tear up. The boy held himself next to me, comforting me in some way, but I could tell that he was also scared.
"This is a robbery!"
