Meh.
Meh meh meh meh meh. Meh. I'm perfectly aware that 'I don't wanna go to school' is completely normal for people my age, I've watched enough teen comedies. But I actually have a good - no, great - reason to not wanna go. This is my first time actually being in a public school system, I've been homeschooled my entire life. My parents are kinda...protective. But for good reason! Not every kid had magical powers that can allow them to do things like teleport and create things out of thin air. If you're wondering, no I do not have mind control. Mikey, my little brother, already bugs me enough about that.
I'm honestly not sure why my parents think I need to go to a public school. They say it's so that I 'can learn social skills' so that I 'can function properly in life'.
Okay A, it's a horrible idea for me to talk to other people (not like I plan to at this new school anyway), and B, when did living with Mikey as a lazy asshole for the rest of eternity once he graduates become a bad life plan? It sounds great to me. So meh. I will meh if I wanna. Meh.
"Gee! You ready yet?"
Oh shit, that's Mikey. What time even is it? I glanced at the clock. Oh shit. 7:00 o'clock, we have to leave right now! I'm not even dressed!
Mikey came running into my room and glared when he saw I wasn't ready. "Dude! We have to leave now or we'll be late! Hurry up!"
"I'll be ready in a minute, wait by the door."
"Fine." He sighed, walking out of the room. "Haven't you ever heard of closing the goddamn door?" I muttered, going to close the door before quickly throwing on a Black Flag t-shirt, a hoodie over that, and some black skinny jeans. I rushed to get my eyeliner on, before finally slipping on a pair of black and white converse. I never said I wasn't emo, I am very emo.
Finally ready, I practically sprinted out of my room to meet Mikey by the front door. "Took you long enough." He muttered and we headed out together.
We walked to school (which is only a couple blocks away from our house, luckily) and once we got there the gigantic crowd of teenagers were already filing through the doors, pushing and shoving and screaming the way teenagers do.
I immediately shrunk back, completely terrified. What happens if I accidentally use one of my powers, and people see? So many things could go horribly wrong. This building may very well be the death of me.
Mikey noticed my reaction and put his hand on my back comfortingly. "Hey, Gee, it'll be okay. Nothing's gonna go wrong. Just don't worry about it."
His words did little to calm me, but I knew I couldn't turn back so I forced myself to stand up straighter and continue walking.
As soon as we reached the crowd everything turned into chaos. Some big, tough looking guy, probably a football player, bumped into me harshly, causing me to be pushed away from Mikey. Before I even had time to steady myself more people kept pushing me around and I got lost in the crowd. This is when I really began to panic.
"Mikey!" I shouted, trying to find out where my brother was. I was NOT about to face this school alone.
"Mikey!" I yelled again when I didn't get an answer the first time. Still no answer.
Someone pushed past me, causing me to fall into someone else. "Hey!" They yelled angrily, shoving me away. I fell to the floor and people trampled over me like a herd of wild buffalo. I quickly scrambled back on my feet and tried to ignore the weird looks people kept giving me as I shouted one more time, "Mikey!"
Then, someone grabbed my arm, making me jump about two feet in the air. "Damn Gee, not even five seconds in and you're already trying to be killed. There's no way you'll survive here." Well thanks for those encouraging words that allow me to not feel like a total loser.
I glared at Mikey, who smirked in response and said, "I'm just kidding, don't worry. Come on, we have to go to the main office."
He pulled me along, keeping a tighter grip on my arm now, and we somehow managed to make it to our destination in one piece. Mikey opened the door to the office and we both went inside. We walked up to the front desk where the receptionist, a young woman with mud blonde hair and wearing a red dress, greeted us. I was happy to let Mikey do all the talking.
"Hello, uhm, my brother Gerard is new here," Mikey began and glanced at me. I was hiding behind him, clinging onto his arm like a small child. He continued, "It's his first day and um, we were told to meet with the principal so yeah..."
The receptionist glanced at me, then back at Mikey and smiled. "Of course. Right this way." She stood up and led us to a wooden door. She knocked twice before opening it slightly and peering inside. "Mr. Goodwin, you have two students here to see you," She said.
Seconds later the door opened all the way, revealing a tall, middle-aged man with gray hair wearing a blue suit. He smiled warmly at Mikey and I, gesturing at us to come inside. We did so and the receptionist left, closing the door behind her.
"Please, take a seat," The man said. We did, and the man sat down across from us and rested his hands on the desk.
"So, you must be Gerard," He spoke. He held out his hand, probably for me to shake, so I did.
"I'm the principal here at Belleville High, you can call me Mr. Goodwin. I'd like to personally welcome you to the school, I'm sure you'll do just fine here. Now, if I've been correctly informed, this is your first time in an actual school system, and before this your parents homeschooled you?" I nodded shyly.
"Well, no need to get worried about anything, you'll get the hang of it soon enough. So, here is your schedule..." he dug around in a pile of papers for a moment before handing me a green sheet of paper with my classes on it. The way these schedules are set up is so confusing, the only reason I even understand it is because every year since Mikey started middle school he's had schedules like this and he always insists on showing them to me until I practically have them memorized.
I shyly took the paper from Mr. Goodwin and put my hands back in my lap. "Mikey made it clear that he's more than willing to show you around, so I'll allow him to do so. Mikey, I did email your teachers to inform them of this so you will not be punished for skipping classes."
Mikey smiled at this. "Awesome! Thanks Mr. Goodwin." The principal smiled back, "No problem. Gerard, you have first lunch which I believe is the same as your brother, you're lucky to have such a close relationship with each other. Most kids at least pretend to despise their siblings, but not you two. That's good. Anyways, I hope you enjoy your first day in a public school system, and feel free to come to me if you need anything. Or the guidance counselor is also available. Welcome to the world of high school, Gerard! Make the most of it!"
On that cheerful note Mikey and I stood up to make our leave. On the way out of the office Mikey waved to the receptionist, who smiled back at him. The staff here are really nice so far.
When we entered the halls, they were almost empty. Just a few straggling kids here and there, but for the most part only tumbleweeds.
"So Gee," Mikey clapped me on the back, making me jump, "Ready for high school?"
I didn't really know how to respond so I just laughed nervously. He smiled at me. "Bet you five bucks you're not." Then he took off walking down the deserted corridors and I quickened my pace to keep up.
