As I pulled on my purple shirt I smiled I loved my job, it might seem shit to everyone else but we always had a right laugh and free drinks at the end of the night made it all worthwhile. I was a barman in a 60, 70 and 80’s club and part of my job was to don the merchandise and dance away the night between serving drinks.

I walked into the club, regulars greeting me along the way and staff nodding their hellos while collecting glasses. I walked behind the bar to dump my bag and coat in the kitchen, then I pulled on a cheesy wig and a pimpy looking chain and moved behind the bar to join in.

My best friend Annie was there, she smiled and give me a kiss and cuddle when I walked up behind her giving her a cuddle. I nuzzled my face into her neck, I loved her she and I always made the nights bearable when other staff where determined to moan about it.

“Hey are we going to show them how it’s done again?” I asked her.

“Sure I am up for it as always, Nat will be in later so we can put on a show for her.” She chuckled.

Natalie was her partner the pair had been dating for around three years and I hadn’t seen a couple as well suited as those two. They weren’t lovey dovey like most couples in fact they were complete opposites, which seemed strange because they seemed more comfortable ignoring each other than clinging to each other. I knew it wasn’t always like that, I had witnessed the way that they looked at each other and there was a true love there. Even if it was only brought out in private.

“Yeah we can show her that just because the uniform is slightly lame doesn’t mean the job is.” I kissed her and went to serve a customer.

The night went on like that, customers getting steadily more and more drunk with us giving them more and more even though they couldn’t handle it. We were half way through the night when I was collecting pint glasses because we were running low and as I was walking round I came across something sooo wrong! I had to grab the bouncers because some middle aged couple were doing things against the cigarette machine that no twenty two year old wants to see.

Eww so gross and in public too! Surely that was supposed to be left to the teenagers?

I heard a familiar song come on and my grimace changed to a smile as I forced my way back to the bar to join Annie. It was so cheesy but so much fun as YMCA played out and we stopped serving to do our dance routine, the customers watching us and we were all laughing along.

Around ten pm Natalie came in and she had a familiar person following her ready to start work, I groaned when I saw him but focused on welcoming Nat. She was out with her friends and was having a very good night by the sounds of it when she said my name.

“Adaaaaam!” She slurred and I laughed.

“Natalie, having fun?” I said enveloping her in a hug.

“As always you know me I always go as far as possible.” She laughed.

“I take it your only just starting too?” I smiled moving to pour her a drink.

She smiled when I handed it to her and asked where Annie was, I shrugged saying she had gone off to collect glasses so she could be anywhere. I asked her where she had been and who she was with and as she was telling me when Annie came back with over twenty pint glasses in her arms. It was a skill I’d shown her as you had to be able to collect as many as possible on one round so that the bar was never left for long.

She dumped the glasses in the kitchen then came back out to greet Nat, I left them to it while I went to serve more customers. I was ringing a drink into the till when an arm wrapped itself around my back, I suppressed an eye roll and turned around to face him.
