Alone. Yes, that's the key word, the most awful word in the English tongue. Murder doesn't hold a candle to it and hell is only a poor synonym.
I knew that I was going to be in trouble when I got home, I just couldn't find it in me to care. Since I was a child, coming up every summer and swimming in the ocean with Jacob and Bella, I was immune to the cold and it was still like that. Unlike my sister Bella, I had chosen to stay with our father instead of our mother, Forks had been my home since I was 12 and I loved it.
I was currently swimming in the river by Waylon's boat house, just enjoying the cold water and the peace and quiet, until I noticed a boat floating towards me. At first I expected it to plow over me before noticing the engine wasn't on. I swam over and realized it was Waylon's boat, making me climb up the small ladder to see my father's friend. I didn't realize until I was already on the boat that there was a problem. "Waylon, hey, are you alright?" I asked, walking over to him and rolling him over on the floor, seeing his eyes frozen open and his skin completely white. I checked for a pulse but found none before I began panicking. I jumped over him and ran to the front of the boat, turning the engine over and driving it back to the boat house, nearly crashing as I tried to park it. I hopped out after tying it up and ran to Waylon's office, realizing I was still in my underwear from my swim before quickly calling my father's number.
"Hey Waylon, what's up?" He answered and I sighed.
"Dad?"
"Madison? What are you doing at the boat house?"
"Dad, I was swimming in the river, and I know I'm not supposed to but I saw Waylon's boat and went to say 'hi'...he's dead...I drove the boat back here to call you..." I felt the tears leaking from my eyes before hearing the boards creaking behind me. "I think someone's here..." I muttered, trying to be quiet.
"I'm on my way baby girl, stay in his office, lock the door!" He demanded and I did just that after hanging up. I hid under the desk trying to calm my breathing as I heard voices through the open window.
"Are you sure?" A women whispered, almost too low for me to hear.
"It's rare, but it happens." A man's voice this time. "I would have hoped for more fight in her though." I hated myself for knowing the man was completely right, I'm hiding under a desk like a coward. I tried to think of anything that I could use as a weapon but came up blank. There's a switch blade in my bag but that's back in my car. Wait...knife! Waylon always carried a knife in his belt. I took a deep breath to calm myself before jumping up and unlocking the door, booking it out of the room and down the dock, back to Waylon's boat and leaping into it, quickly grabbing the hunting knife off of his belt. As I spun around to go back I was cut off by a red headed women, smiling down at me.
