Today is my first surfing competition in California. I'm overly psyched, but also very nervous. I am already on the beach stretching because the first heat is in 20 minutes. My dad came to wish me luck, but I wish Jay could've without my dad freaking out.
"Ellie and Tarra. Please make your way down to the water. Ellie and Tarra. please make your way down to the water."
Well here I go. This is my chance to prove to the judges that I have what it takes.
"Three...two...one. Go!"
I paddle out as fast as I can. I see the perfect wave building so I turned around and paddled back to shore. I got onto my knees and then stood up. I rode under the curl of the wave because I knew that would get me points. Once I excited the curl I did a couple of flips and rode the wave back to shore before it broke.
I waited to get my score. I saw Tarra fall off her board so I'm pretty sure I beat her.
"Ellie your final score is...48 points out of 50."
My jaw dropped. I ran over to my dad who gave me water and a huge hug. I beat out Tarra who only received 35 out of 50 points.
"Now to present the scholarship is Jay from our brand, Roxy."
So he wasn't just not here because of my dad!
"The overall winner who will receive a medal/trophy, a scholarship, and acceptance into Roxy surfing is... Ellie!"
Oh my gosh! I won! I ran up the stairs to where Jay was standing and gave him a huge hug. The other Roxy surfers took a picture with me and congratulated me.
"Where did you learn to surf like that?" my dad asked.
"Well...umm...Jay taught me."
"Since your surfing skills have improved I'll let you see him for surfing and for surfing only."
I smiled on the inside and I knew that this was going to be a great summer.
