Sophie scurried home, trying not to cry. Though she was pleased of how Malia's mother had talked about her. She realized that she had to look happy so Grady and Edaline wouldn't suspect a thing. So she plastered a fake (but real-looking) smile on her face and paraded home.
"I'm home!" Sophie announced, putting on her cheeriest tone possible. "Welcome home, honey. How was the gala?" Edaline asked. She beckoned Grady and Sophie to come over to the living room where she was sitting.
"It was great! Absolutely brilliant!" she gushed. Sophie went on telling a happier version of the Winnowing Gala before she yawned and wanted to go to sleep.
Over the years, Vertina and Sophie had started a friendly relationship with a strong bond (as hopeless as it sounds). So Sophie always knew she could trust Vertina with anything she told her.
Including pouring her heart over the (rather irritated and grumpy) mirror about the Winnowing Gala.
Once she finished. The spectral mirror sighed, exasperated. "Well, now you know Mr. Prince likes you!" she said. "I guess that counts as good news. When Jolie came home sobbing about...Brant and the Neverseen," she paused here, relieving the memories. "I told her to act normal until she was completely sure he was part of it. So, the best thing to do would be to act normally. By doing this, it will be easier to...'investigate.' You catch my drift?"
Sophie nodded, thanking her. "Thanks, Vertina." she mumbled drowsily before she changed and pulled the covers over her head.
* * * * *
The next morning, Sophie waited a few hours before leaping over to Everglen. The gate opened only a moment after she rang the door bell. Biana engulfed her into a giant bear hug.
"SOPHIE!!" she screamed. "I'm so, so, so sorry about what happened at the Winnowing Gala! I recently heard this morning!" she lied. "Mmhmm...." drawled Sophie, going along with the lie. "Hey, Biana?" she asked.
Biana's head snapped up. "What is it?"
"Listen, Biana. Do you think you can tell me more about Malia Grinrich?" Biana's eyes narrowed significantly, suspicion shadowing her face. "How do you know about her last name?" she asked, skeptical. Shoot, I made a slip. thought Sophie. "Er, uh...Grady told me yesterday when I told him about Malia..."
Biana eyed Sophie long enough to make her squirm. At last, she believed Sophie. She couldn't have listened to Fitz's confession did she? She couldn't have.
How wrong poor Biana was.
As soon as they stepped into the mansion, Biana screamed. "Fitz! Keefe! Sophie is here! Stop arguing and get down here!" Sophie pretended to look confused. "Arguing?" she inquired. Biana looked like she wanted to smash her head against a brick wall. She fumbled for an excuse. "W-well, you know boys...always arguing and all that stuff!" Naturally, Sophie would've been very suspicious with her answer. Though she did know what was going on, she pretended this was all normal.
"Mmhmm..." she nodded casually.
Biana visibly relaxed, noticeably relieved.
When Fitz and Keefe came down the stairs, both frowning, there was tension in the air. Keefe looked like he might punch someone while Fitz just looked like somebody had accused him, the golden boy of the golden family, of committing a terrible crime.
Fitz ran a hand through his dark hair, letting out a sigh. While Keefe glanced at Sophie, a tinge of guilt and pity in his eyes as he tried his best to act normally (Biana was already glaring daggers at them; Fitz in particular).
"Uh...hi." Sophie greeted, all of the enthusiasm drained out of her voice.
Fitz managed a small wave in reply while Keefe sounded a lot happier than the others. "Howdy, Foster! Erm...whaddya have for dinner last night?" In a normal circumstance, this would sound unnatural. But this is Keefe, people. Keefe can do or be anything he wants.
Sophie couldn't help but giggle. And she did notice Fitz give a tiny glare at Keefe. In the past she wasn't aware of these things, but now she was. Sophie quickly peeled her eyes away from Fitz and fragments of what Vertina had said the night before came back. She had to investigate discreetly.
"I hope you all remember, but I had dinner at the gala. Remember? Y'know...Fitz's Winnowing Gala...?" Fitz, Keefe and Biana all exchanged knowing glances, Fitz looking the guiltiest of them all, regret glazing his eyes over.
They all nodded slowly.
Sophie raised her eyebrows but didn't say anything.
She decided to revisit the question she asked Biana earlier.
"Um, Biana? Remember my question I asked earlier." Biana seemed to panic slightly before lying smoothly. "Sorry, Sophie. But what was your question?" Sophie bit her lip before answering. "Can you tell me a bit more about Malia Grinrich?"
Sophie did not fail to notice Fitz and Keefe sending alarmed glances at Biana. Her features twisted with impatience. It seemed like she wanted to scream, "SHUT UP!" But, of course, that would ruin her cover. How much she would pay to be a telepath right now. Instead, she gave them the "Don't worry. I've got this under control." look.
However, Biana did pale considerably, but she did look slightly calmer than she felt. She took a deep breath before she answered Sophie's question. "Malia Grinrich is the richer version of Stina. IT'S EVEN IN THE FREAKING NAME. She's an absolute brat who thinks she's better than others. She has a massive crush on Fitz and has been threatening girls around Foxfire who talk to him sometimes. Her mother heard about what happened between you and her. Differing from their daughter, Lord and Lady Grinrich are actually quite decent people. Anyway, she heard about what happened to you and Malia, so now she's scooping dinosaur poop at the Sanctuary for the rest of the month. She deserved it anyway."
Sophie nodded quickly, before falling into the nearest chair; the stuffing inside was so soft that the chair literally caved in before sending Sophie bouncing out again. She sighed before asking her next question.
"Where does Malia live?"
